Dear Mr Andrews,

Grand Final Eve Public Holiday. What a Joke! Do you really believe this will help the economy?

Why do we need a public holiday for any football day, grand final eve or grand final day? People who love football (as I do) will make time to watch the game either live or on television as they have done for many years.

What do you really think is going to happen on the Friday before grand final? Yes no doubt the streets of Melbourne will be crowded with passionate supporters cheering their teams as they parade down the street.(as they have done for many years)

Then what will happen? Will there be coffee shops open and restaurants for people to go to? Will there be as many people stay in Melbourne and even want to dine as the cost of accommodation has now sky rocketed more than usual for what is a busy weekend?

Will the Motels be left vacant on the Friday night as people can no longer afford to stay in Melbourne for their usual 3 day break as this weekend has become way to expensive and where will they dine? Who will be open?

Will cafes and restaurants stay open and have all their family working and employee minimal staff, work their butts off and not make money for the day or evening or shall they close?

Will people chose to head to Melbourne just for the Saturday night? Accommodation will be a reasonable price and they know their favourite restaurant will be open and not have to pay a public holiday surcharge.

What is the cost to all the Melbourne businesses and the employees who have missed out on their much needed casual pay for Friday?

What will the public holiday do to the rest of the state? What will the cost be? Will businesses around the state open to just break even or perhaps go backwards?

Mr Andrews, I realise you are not in small business but if this was your money and you had the opportunity to own our business for this day what would you do?

Grand final eve day 2014

You could employee 33 people. Pay them a wage of $3872.90 + superannuation + pay the government payroll tax! And make a profit, excluding rent, rates, power & loan repayments of $3706.65c

(We chose to open)

Grand final eve day 2015

You could employee 33 people. Pay them a wage of $8209.00 (as its now a public holiday) + superannuation + pay the government payroll tax! And make a loss, excluding rent, rates, power & loan repayments of $370.55c

(Why would we open?)

Victoria already has 10 public holidays a year and to add any more is totally unnecessary and puts far too much pressure on many small businesses.

Yours sincerely
