Dear LNC Member

As you know pressure on the NHS continues to mount with the vast majority of NHS trusts facing significant challenges. Key financial and clinical targets are being closely monitored with pressure on doctors to deliver with a management focus on ever tightening up of local policies and arrangements. The government is also pushing forward with its plans for seven day services, local STPs are making plans for changes that could impact significantly on the way in which doctors work. Against this background it is as vital as ever that LNCs are as effective as possible and negotiations with employers are a key part of this.

The BMA has reviewed and updated the LNC Handbook which can be reached by following this link:

We would also urge LNC members to make sure they are up to date with LNC training. A number of online training modules are available. Details on how to access these and a link to the BMJ learning site giving you access are given at the bottom of this email. For those who completed these some time ago, new modules have been added. The modules attract CPD points and can be a useful way to add to your portfolio.

In addition, we have organised a further face to face follow-up training day. This will take place in Bristol on Monday 19 June 2017 at Engineer’s House in Clifton between 9.30am and 4.30pm ( This is an opportunity to network with colleagues on other LNCs, spend protected time thinking about your role on the LNC and what this can achieve, develop further knowledge and understanding and practice your skills in a safe environment. The course is designed as a practical skills-based experience and will cover:
- the LNC and negotiation
- negotiation principles
- negotiation skills
- reaching agreements

By the end of the course delegates should have further developed their skills and knowledge in this vital area and be better prepared for the challenges that LNCs face. For course bookings please contact Denise Kanetti, email . In order to attend you need to have completed at least the first 8 online modules by the beginning of June, so there is time to reserve a provisional place on the face to face training now so long as you then undertake the online modules.

As an accredited BMA representative you are entitled to apply for paid time off from your employer to attend this course without the need to use up annual, study or professional leave.

In the current climate the role of the LNC in securing local agreements that improve upon and protect national terms and conditions is extremely important. The BMA's training programme, based partly on e-learning and also on face to face courses, is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to support you in carrying out the vital role that you play. I do hope you and your colleagues will take up this opportunity and I hope to see you in Bristol in June.

Kind regards

Richard Griffiths
