A WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH TO
FIRE POLICY
2010
FIRE ROUTINE FOR STAFF
- Any one discovering a fire should immediately sound the nearest fire alarm call point. (Details of this appear on Fire Procedure Sheet situated at the door of every room).
- On hearing the fire alarm, Pupils should be lined up in single file and proceed smartly to the Assembly Point as designated. The teacher should check that no one is left in the classroom and then close the door taking her/his register with them.
- At the Assembly Point each teacher should then report that all pupils are accounted for.
- Pupils not actually in class when the alarm sounds should proceed to the nearest door to the agreed Assembly Point immediately.
- At the Assembly Point Mrs McKay will receive reports from Nursery, P1, P2 and P3. Mrs Raeburn will receive reports from E.P., P4, P5, P6 and P7 and office and kitchen staff.
- Mrs McKay and Mrs Raeburn will then report to the Headteacher.
OTHER DUTIES
- On hearing alarm bell Mrs McMahon will dial 999 and report fire before leaving building.
- SfLA’s will assume responsibility for evacuation of pupils in their charge.
- Nursery Early Years Officer to check toilets at the Nursery end of the building.
- Room 7 teacher to check toilets at P3/2 end.
IMPORTANT POLICY POINTS
- Staff must react immediately to the sounding of the alarm. Do not wait for verbal advice.
- Alarm drills will be held termly (with no prior warning).
- Janitor will test alarms weekly and keep a log of this, which will be countersigned by the Headteacher periodically.
- A log of fire details and time taken for evacuation will be kept.
- Anything considered being a problem in the evacuation of pupils should be reported to H.T. immediately e.g. Fire Door which will not open.

APPENDIX TO FIRE DRILL REGULATIONS
ARRANGEMENTS FOR INTERVALS AND LUNCHTIME
As a fire could start during the above times I have included the following common sense guidelines for staff.
If fire breaks out and the alarm sounds staff present should evacuate the building by the route appropriate to where they are, and proceed to their Assembly Point.
Pupils should be aware that if the alarm sounds they should also gather at their class Assembly Point and await further instructions.
It is not necessary to proceed to your classroom and retrieve your register.
SfLA’s, Janitor and Senior Management will check that all pupils are out of the building.
While proceeding to Assembly Point, staff should instruct any pupils whom they encounter to follow them.
