Production/Installation Manager

Responsible to:Exhibition Coordinator, Deputy CEO

Responsible for:Technical Crew, Production/Design Assistants, Volunteers.

We are looking to hire a freelance Production/Installation Manager to manage the pre-production and installation of our latest exhibition A World inside a Book…. The Gruffalo, Dragons and other Creatures’, which will be based on the hugely popular range of picture books by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson.

We are looking for someone with strong all round exhibition installation and fit out experience, including construction management, lighting and AV work with a background in installing exhibitions in non-traditional or installation spaces

Background:

Discover is the UK’s first hands-on creative literature charity for children aged 0-11 years and their families/carers dedicated to generating a love of language, literature and stories. Based in Stratford in East London young storybuilders enter a labyrinth of magical environments designed to stimulate curiosity and imagination. We host a rotating programme of interactive immersive exhibitions for families and school, each one designed to encourage a love of reading.

The Discover team works alongside bestselling authors and illustrators to create immersive installations, designed to feed children’s’ creativity and develop their storytelling and creative writing skills. Recent exhibitions have included The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers,Michael Rosen’s Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things and currently The Fantastic Word of Dr. Seuss.

We are currently producing our new exhibition A World inside a Book…. The Gruffalo, Dragons and other Creatures’, (Opening October 2017) and are looking to commission an experienced Production Manager to join the team and be responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of achieving a completely enchanting and immersive environment.

Duties:

  • To be responsible for the whole exhibition pre-production and installation process ensuring the design and build is realised, to the highest possible standard, of the artistic vision of the Creative Team.
  • To be responsible for budgetary planning, costing, monitoring, reporting, spending and control of agreed amounts on production materials, props, labour and other technical items, in close liaison with the Exhibition Co-ordinator.
  • Leading on any new set build and construction, working closely with the designer (Discover). Practical build skills will be required.
  • Assembling a team of technical staff to ensure the successful delivery of the exhibition.
  • Over seeing technical installation of lighting and sound. Liaise with the Lighting and Sound Designer to obtain plans for the installation.
  • Ensuring that the set/installation complies with all relevant Health and Safety and Fire regulations are adhered to in all production areas during production periods.
  • To schedule production work so that it is completed and ready for the specified time and within the agreed budget.
  • To be responsible for the organisation and maintenance of workshop areas, equipment and the storage spaces during the period of the contract.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Creative Team/Management Team.
  • Prepare a Risk Assessment for the show liaising with the Deputy Chief Executive who has overall responsibility for building Health and Safety

A full driving license with experience of driving vans is desirable.

Key Days:

You will need to be available for:

  • An agreed amount of pre-production days between now and the delivery of the exhibition.
  • The entire get in of the exhibition (Early September – Early October)

Project Fee to be negotiated on agreed time commitments and experience.
