Danni & Caasi The Reproductive System

Overall function of system:

·  For males – produce and maintain sperm cells. Components of the male reproductive system transfer sperm cells into the female reproductive system.

·  For females – organs produce and maintain female sex cells, receive sperm cells, and transport the sperm cells and oocytes within the female system. Also supports the development of embryos and fetuses, and provides the passageway by which the fetus leaves the prenatal environment.

List of all Organs:

·  Male –

o  Penis = copulatory organ

o  Bladder = collects urine execreted by the kidneys

o  Vas deferens = sperm duct

o  Prostate = secretes slightly acidic fluid that contains 20-30% of semen.

o  Corpus cavernosum = one of a pair of sponge-like regions that that contains most of the blood in the penis during penile erections.

o  Corpus spongiosum = prevents the urethra from pinching closed, maintaining the urethra as the exit path.

o  Scrotum = pouch-like structure behind the penis that holds and protects the testes.

o  Epididymis = coiled tubules found within the scrotum that store sperm. Also the site of their final maturation.

o  Testis = produce sperm cells and secretes the testosterone

o  Prepuce = foreskin; covers and protects the penis

·  Female –

o  Fallpoian tube = two thin tubes leading from the ovaries to uterus. Track for released egg.

o  Ovary = the primary female reproductive organ; produces oocytes

o  bladder = collects urine execreted by the kidneys

o  urethra = exit path for urine

o  clitoris = pleasure

o  labia minora = inner skin of the genitals

o  labia majora = outer skin of the genitals

o  vagina = tubular organ that leads from the uterus to the vestibule of the reproductive tract
