Dane County Regional Airport Terminal Project Overview:

  • The $65 million project, constructed in three phases over five years, began in 2001. $59.8 million of the project cost will be derived from airport revenue, primarily the Passenger Facility Charge; $3.6 million in Federal funds, and $1.6 million in State funds.
  • The airport receives no county tax subsidy. The expansion project will be paid for through airport revenues over 20 years.
  • Project Design Team: Architectural Alliance of Minneapolis, Mead & Hunt of Madison, Arnold & O’Sheridan, of Madison.
  • General Contractors: Bauer & Raether Builders of Madison, Oscar J. Boldt Construction of Appleton, and Tri-North Bulders/GPD-Gilbane of Madison and Milwaukee, respectively.
  • Doubled the size of the airport to 274,000 square feet.
  • Behind the scenes baggage screening and new security checkpoints were designed post 9-11, to efficiently meet new security directives.
  • Ticket lobby has 21 agent positions.
  • Baggage claim was enlarged from two to three carousels, with room to add a fourth.
  • Thirteen new passenger loading gates were constructed, up from nine, with 11 of the 13 connected by jet bridges from the terminal.
  • An executive conference room equipped with audio-visual equipment and a full kitchen, two new training rooms, and two smaller conference rooms are available for rent.
  • Behind the scenes baggage screening and new security checkpoints were designed post 9-11, built to specification for new security directives.
  • An Art Court and a Greeter’s Lounge with fireplace and soft leather seating add to the comfort and distinctive ambience of the building.
  • The terminal construction incorporates 25 green building strategies, including water efficient landscaping, recycled carpet and acoustic ceiling tiles, non-toxic wood preservative treatment, chlorine-free vinyl wallcovering, and on-site construction waste recycling. Recycled materials were used throughout the building and construction debris was separated and sorted, with 98 percent collected for recycling (40,000 tons). Even some of the aqua blue wall sconces are made from recycled soft drink bottles. A building automation system dims lights and modifies heating and cooling to unused areas of the terminal. A chiller plant makes ice at night that is used to cool the building during the day.
  • Restaurants include Caffe Ritazza, Ancora Coffee Roasters, Uno Chicago Pizza, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Quizno’s Subs, Great Dane Brew Pub and Wurst German Bar, all managed by Creative Host.
  • Retail stores include the Wisconsin Marketplace, CNBC Store, and Lake Country Travel Mart, all managed by The Paradies Shops.
