Active Travel Champion Training Fund

We are pleased to announceSustrans has secured funding to deliver active travel interventions by providing funds towards the purchasing and delivery of training which will support or contribute to the aims of the Champion in their chosen setting.

Active Travel Champions play a crucial role in encouraging others to travel more actively and sustainably – be it for the commute to work; travelling for business or leisure; or, arriving at college or university.

Champions also play an essential part in helping organisations promote active or sustainable journeys; reduce traffic congestion; improve staff health and productivity; and,lower carbon emissions.

This document provides a brief overview of the key elements to consider prior to applying for the fund.

Funding Conditions

1Who can apply?

1.1Only Sustrans Active Travel Champions supported through the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation are eligible to apply to thefund.

2Funding Conditions

2.1Recoverable VAT is not an eligible cost and should not be included in the application. Non-recoverable VAT is an eligible cost and can be included. You must be able to demonstrate that any VAT being claimed is non-recoverable.

2.2Trainingorganisers will be obliged to make repayment of all monies received in the event a breach of the conditions of fund.

3General Criteria

3.1Funding will be allocated to Champions supported through the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundationwho not only best demonstrate the need but also how the fund will add value to their delivery of active travel interventions in their chosen setting.

3.2Funding applications are for training. This will help individuals with the delivery of active travel activities and enabling others to choose more physically active and sustainable transport methods.

3.3We will prioritise applications which clearly demonstrate how they apply best practice in identifying the need and impact of the proposed project fund.

3.4Funding will be offered solely at the discretion of the Sustrans awarding panel.

3.5All funding is provided with an understanding and commitment from individuals that the Training Fund will be used in their role as an Active Travel Champion in any setting.

3.6Applications to the Training Fund can be made all year round.

4Training Criteria

4.1Funding for training will help individuals with the delivery of active travel activities and enabling others to choose more physically active and sustainable transport methods.

4.2Funding for training courses comes with a commitment from the Champion that the training will be used in their role as an Active Travel Champion to enabling others people to choose more physically active and sustainable methods of transport.

4.3Courses will be considered on their individual merit by Sustrans. Please see Appendix 1 for a list of suggested training courses.

4.4Care must be taken by applicants to ensure the course provider is accredited to deliver training to the required level and industry standard.

4.5Applicants must be able to clearly demonstrate how the course will contribute and support their role as an Active Travel Champion.

4.6Consideration must be taken as to the location, cost and duration of the course. This must be demonstrated in the application. This may be sourced by Sustrans’ Active Travel Champion Coordinator.

4.7No part of the Active Travel Champion Fund will cover travel expenses to or from training locations. Travel expenses for training may be claimed by Champions through their everyday project volunteer fund.

4.8Applications seeking to cover the cost of any goods/services which could be used to support training must be made separately through the Active Travel Champion Grant.

5Application Feedback

5.1Sustrans will endeavour to respond to each application within a month. Applicants should not make financial commitments until they have received a written offer of training.

5.2 Arrangements must be made for the training provider to invoice Sustrans.

5.3 Copies of certificates or completion of course notes must be formalised to the Active Travel Coordinator.

6Other

6.1Sustrans retains the right to use details about the schemes organisations have implemented, including a photograph for publicity purposes, including creating case-studies.

In order to be eligible for the Training Fund,applicants must agree to all of the conditions of funding set out in this document.

Applications will be considered on merit of the potential impact and sustainability of the training spend but also on the link with an over-arching plan that it links into such as work place travel plans, group action plans or awareness weeks/days.
