1.4   DESIGN / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Edit the following paragraph carefully as required to suit local building codes or performance requirements.

A.   Structural Performance: Provide handrails and railings systems, including top rail, bottom rail, end posts, intermediate posts, in-fill panels and hardware capable of withstanding the following structural loads without exceeding allowable design working stress of materials for handrails, railings, anchors and connections in conformance with applicable codes:

1.   Top Rail of Guards: Shall withstand the following loads:

a.   Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89kN) applied at any point and in any direction.

b.   Uniform load of 50 lbf-ft (0.07kN-m) applied horizontally and concurrently with uniform load of 100 lbf-ft (0.14kN-m) applied vertically downward.

c.   Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.

2.   Handrails Not Serving as Top Rails: Shall withstand the following loads:

a.   Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied at any point and in any direction.

b.   Uniform load of 50 lbf-ft (0.07kN-m) applied in any direction

c.   Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.

3.   Guard Infill Area: Shall withstand the following loads:

a.   Concentrated horizontal load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied to 1 sq ft at any point in system, including panels, intermediate rails, balusters, or other elements composing infill area. Loads need not be assumed to act concurrently with loads on top rails in determining stress on guard.

1.5   SUBMITTALS

A.   Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B.   Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:

1.   Preparation instructions and recommendations.

2.   Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.

3.   Installation methods.

4.   Description of materials, components, fabrication, and finishes.

C.   Shop Drawings: Submit manufacturer's shop drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, and details, indicating materials, components, sizes, dimensions, tolerances, hardware, finishes, options, accessories, and installation. Show details of attaching railing system to supports.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete the following paragraphs if LEED is not applicable.

D.   LEED Submittals: Provide documentation of how the requirements of Credit will be met:

1.   List of proposed materials with recycled content. Indicate post-consumer recycled content and pre-consumer recycled content for each product having recycled content.

2.   Product data and certification letter indicating percentages by weight of post-consumer and pre-consumer recycled content for products having recycled content.

E.   Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two complete sets of color chips representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns.

F.   Verification Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples, minimum size 6 inches (150 mm) square, representing actual product, color, and patterns.

G.   Manufacturer's Certificates: Certify products meet or exceed specified requirements.

H.   Closeout Submittals: Provide manufacturer's maintenance instructions that include recommendations for periodic checking and adjustment of cable tension and periodic cleaning and maintenance of all railing and infill components.

1.6   QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.   Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum 10 years documented experience.

B.   Installer Qualifications: Manufacturer's trained installers or an installer acceptable to the manufacturer

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

C.   Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.

1.   Finish areas designated by Architect.

2.   Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect.

3.   Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

1.7   DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.   Deliver and store materials to site in manufacturer's original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.

B.   Store products in clean, dry area indoors until ready for installation. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

C.   Protect materials and finish from damage during handling and installation.

1.8   SEQUENCING

A.   Ensure that locating templates and other information required for installation of products of this section are furnished to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.

B.   Ensure that products of this section are supplied to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress.

1.9   PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.   Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

B.   Verify actual openings by field measurements before fabrication; show recorded measurements on shop drawings.

C.   Coordinate field measurements and fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid construction delays.

1.10   PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING

A.   Convene a pre-installation meeting approximately two weeks before start of fabrication of railing frame components and construction of railing frame component mounting surfaces. Require attendance of parties directly affecting work of this section, including Contractor, Architect and Installer. Review the following:

1.   Specific method of installation of components into mounting surfaces.

2.   Installation, adjusting, cleaning, and protection of railing system.

3.   Coordination with other work.

1.11   COORDINATION

A.   Coordinate Work with other operations and installation of adjacent materials to avoid damage.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1   MANUFACTURERS

2.2   CUSTOM STAINLESS STEEL HANDRAILS

A.   Chicago System: System design is based on a 5/8 inch wide flat stainless steel balusters with glass panels with baluster spacing up to 6 feet apart. The system is completely seamless with no splices, saddles, miters, or seams. All directional changes are welded and polished seamlessly in the field.

1.   Stainless Steel Structural Tubing: ASTM A 554, Type 304 or 316, minimum tensile strength 70,000 psi.

2.   Handrails: Stainless steel with a 360- 400 grit finish. Size as follows:

a.   1.9 inch O.D. approved by ADA

b.   1-7/8 inch diameter.

c.   1.5 inch O.D. tube.

3.   Balusters: Solid stainless steel 5/8 inch by 2-1/2 inch bar with a #4 finish.

4.   Connection Fittings: ASTM A 554, Type 304 stainless steel with the following finish:

a.   #7 polished

b.   #5 satin (brushed),

c.   Titanium plated (brass look).

5.   Glass In-fill Panels: ASTM C1048, Kind FT (fully tempered), Condition A (uncoated), Type 1 (transparent flat glass), Quality-Q3; Class 1 (clear); tested for surface and edge compression according to ASTM C 1048 and for impact strength according to 16 CFR 1201 for Category II materials.

a.   Glass lites, 3/8 inch clear tempered, all four sides polished.

b.   Glass lites, 3/8 inch tinted tempered, all four sides polished. Color as selected by the Architect.

c.   Glass lites, 1/2 inch clear tempered, all four sides polished. Also available in other commercially available colors.

d.   Glass lites, 1/2 inch tinted tempered, all four sides polished. Color as selected by the Architect.

e.   Custom design as indicated on the Drawings.

6.   Bolts, Screws and Nuts: Stainless steel with a #7 polished finish on all visible surfaces. Do not use metals that will be corrosive and incompatible with materials being fastened.

B.   Double Baluster System: System design uses Double side-by-side 304 stainless steel baluster tubes as the basic element of this system. System provided with an adjustable handrail segment to accommodate all angles of descent and changes of direction. System is completely seamless with no splices, saddles, miters, or seams. All directional changes are welded and polished seamlessly in the field.

1.   Stainless Steel Structural Tubing: ASTM A 554, Type 304 or 316, minimum tensile strength 70,000 psi:

2.   Handrails: Stainless steel with a 360- 400 grit finish. Size as follows:

4.   Frame tubes: Stainless steel tubes, 5/8 inch O.D. with a 360-400 grit finish.

5.   Connection Fittings: ASTM A 554, Type 304 stainless steel with the following finish:
