WHAT’S IN THIS UPDATE:
NHS Reforms - despite changes and delays to the Health and Social Care 2011 Bill, the NHS Reform process continues to generate publications. Documents which inform the creation of the new NHS structures were published for the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS Commissioning Board, 2012), the NHS Trust Development Authority (Department of Health, 2012a) and workforce planning – education and training (Department of Health, 2012b). The NHS Future Forum published its second report (Field, 2012) together with a report on the benefits of integrated healthcare (Goodwin et al., 2012). The All Party Parliamentary Group Primary Care & Public Health questioned the need for large scale reform (All Party Parliamentary Group Primary Care & Public Health, 2012).
Telehealth - the Department of Health has signed a concordat with the Telehealth industry (Department of Health, 2012c) to accelerate the use of telehealth in the NHS. The 2020Health think tank published a report on lessons for the NHS from the implementation of Telehealth by US Veterans Health Administration (Cruickshank, 2012).
NHS 111- NHS Alliance reported on concerns about lack of Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and local involvement in NHS 111 implementation (NHS Alliance, 2012). The Department of Health published an update of the minimum dataset to December 2011 (Department of Health, 2011).
Management and Finance – the Institute of Healthcare Management published a code of conduct for healthcare managers (Institute of Healthcare Management, 2012) and HQIP/GGI produced a handbook for Good Governance providing principles of good governance in healthcare organisations (Bullivant, Burgess, Corbett-Nolan, & Godfrey, 2012). The King’s Fund looked at the value of Service Line Management to NHS organisations (Foot, Sonola, Maybin, & Naylor, 2012). The Centre for Innovation in Health Management published a guide to ethical decision making in the NHS (Baxter, Fischer, & Malby, 2012). The Audit Commission/Monitor published a guide to cost improvement programmes [CIPs] for all NHS Trusts – including Ambulance Trusts (Audit Commission & MONITOR, 2012). The Office for Health Economics commission on competition within the NHS reported, broadly supporting competition within defined limits (Office of Health Economics, 2012). Two reports look at NHS performance, The King’s Fund Quarterly Report (Appleby, Thompson, & Galea, 2012) and comparison with international health systems form the OECD (Squires, 2011).
Sustainability – the RAND corporation (Ling et al., 2012) looks at issues relating to sustainability within the NHS. The NHS Sustainable Development Unit (NHS Sustainable Development Unit, 2012) reviews briefly current practice and policies.
End of Life Care – NICE issued a Guide to Commissioners on end of life care for adults (National Institute for Clinical Excellence, 2011). The NHS National End of Life Programme reported on the influence of deprivation on EOLC (Pring & Verne, 2012).
Legal / Regulation - NHS Employers published an interim guide for NHS organisations on implementing the Equality Act 2010 (NHS Employers, 2011). Consultancy d4 report on regulatory issues in the UK, EU and USA around publishing and using health care apps on smart phones (d4 Research, 2012). The Audit Commission reviewed the Quality Accounts of 91 NHS Trusts and published summary findings and recommendations (Audit Commission, 2012).
Ambulance Services – the National Prescribing Centre published their final report on the Safe Management and Use of Controlled Drugs in the Ambulance and Paramedic services in England (National Prescribing Centre, 2012)
Data Management – The Cabinet Office published a summary of an across government consultation on open data including healthcare/NHS (Cabinet Office, 2012).
Urgent and Emergency Care – The NHS Information Centre published data on A&E attendances for 2010/11 Accident & Emergency attendances in England (experimental statistics) 2010/11 (NHS Information Centre, 2012). The King’s Fund published an analysis of the data relating to emergency bed use. The RAND Corporation published a review of evidence relating to Emergency Readmissions on behalf of the Department of Health (Nolte, Roland, Guthrie, & Brereton, 2012).
Patient Groups / Conditions – Better Health Briefing summarises health related issues around Gypsies and Travellers (Matthews, 2012), The House Of Commons Library has prepared an analysis of trends form statistical data related to alcohol misuse and health implications (Harker, 2012). NICE published an update of evidence relevant to COPD (NHS Evidence, 2012).
Useful but not elsewhere reported – the Centre for Cities published a review of data relating to cities looking at key economic indicators such as unemployment (Centre for Cities, 2012). A useful wall chart, Back to health , back to life. How allied health professionals make a difference to patient care, shows how AHPs contribute to patient care (North East Allied Health Professionals Cooperative, 2012).
