CSS Principal’s Report to PAC

Monday, February 29, 2016

Good evening:

Things continue to be busy since our last PAC Meeting. The 2nd Semester start-up went relatively smooth and we are well into our 3rd term now. Our 1st semester report cards were distributed on February 29th and provincial exam marks were posted today. Students can access their exam marks by via the link which has been posted on our website. Students need their PEN (Personal Education Number), which is on their report cards, to access their results. The link is below, as well.

Our Ski & Snowboard Team had a great season winning the North Shore Title again. The basketball teams have all been busy and the season is coming to a close in the next week. Thanks to our volunteers who coached, sponsored and drove our students to theses various events. The following teams have begun practices for our spring season: Ultimate (co-ed junior & senior), Golf, Rugby (boys & girls) and Mountain Biking. Track and Field will be in full swing in the coming weeks as well.

The CSS Cool School Program continues to provide excellent opportunities for our students to work on trades based activities with local red seal journeymen. The program is running Tuesday (woodwork) and Thursday (metal & auto)—3:30 until 7:00 pm.

We had a Grade 8/9 Health Fair last Thursday. Several Grade 11 & 12 students supported us during this venture. Some of the activities included: TCO squared (a presentation on human trafficking), Community Connections (with the RCMP, our school nurse and a doctor), Drug & Alcohol, Sex Ed, Stress Ninjasand Chat Café (where students provided feedback on a variety of issues including mental health). My thanks go out to CSS Counselor, Wendy Charters, along with our VP Mark Sauer and Aboriginal Success Counselor, Melissa Bell, for spearheading this event. Thanks also to Community School Coordinator, AbbieCorman for her support.

SD 46 is in the process of being audited and the Ministry of Education auditors will be at Chatelech tomorrow. Our office staff has been working extremely hard to pull the appropriate documentation together. Once the audit is over we will be tackling the 2016-2017 Timetable. We have over 400 course selection sheets completed and we hope to be closer to 500 by the end of the week. Our enrolment projection for next year is about 500 students; down by about 25 students from this year.

The last day of classes, before our two-week Spring Break, is Friday, March 11th. Our staff will return on Tuesday, March 29th for a non-instructional day to continue work on the new-revised curriculum. Students will be back in classes on Wednesday, March 30th.

I want to thank the parents and guardians who continue to provide ongoing support to our school and our students. I really appreciate the work that is done behind the scenes to make Chatelech a great place for learning.

Thanks again to the PAC for your ongoing support as well.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Heidebrecht
