“ThePowerofSTEAM”isanexpansionoftheactivitiespresentedinconjunctionwiththe2016RegionalIowaBrailleChallenge.STEAMisaneducationalapproachtolearningthatusesScience,Technology,Engineering,theArtsandMathematicstoguidestudentsthroughengaginglearningexperiencesthatcombinescientificinquirywiththecreativearts.Learnerstakethoughtfulrisks,persistinproblem-solving,embracecollaboration,andworkthroughthecreativeprocess.Thesearetheinnovators,educators,leaders,andlearnersofthe21stcentury!
The free STEAMactivitiesbeginintheafternoon,startingat12:30.Anumberof“ChargingStations”willbesetupintheAssemblyRoomandwillfeaturehands-onexperiencesforparentsandBrailleChallengestudents(aftertheyfinishcompeting)inareasincludingTechnology,Braille,Transition,VocationalRehabilitation,Library,HomeandPersonalManagement,Shop,CaneTravel,ConsumerOrganizations,IRIS,andNewsline.Akeynotespeaker,CarySupalo,willgiveapresentationimmediatelyfollowingtheBrailleChallengeawardsceremony,“ThePowerofSTEAM.”

Dr.SupaloreceivedhisPh.D.fromPennStateUniversityin2010witharesearchinterestinchemicaleducation.Hefocusedonthedevelopmentofaseriesoftalkingandaudiblelaboratorytoolsthatfosteredahands-onsciencelearningexperienceinthesecondarysciencelaboratoryclassroom.Throughhisresearchhemodifiedvariouslaboratorycurriculumstodevelopasetofbestpracticesforteachingscienceinahands-onwaytostudentswhoareblindorvisuallyimpaired.
HisdriveforthedevelopmentofnewaccesstechnologiesinthesciencelaboratoryclassroomissupportedbyUnitedStates federalgrantstosupporttheproductdevelopmentconducted throughhisfirm,IndependenceScience.ThissmallbusinessisaffiliatedwiththePurdueUniversityResearchParklocatedinWestLafayette,IndianaandhasclosetiestoPurdueUniversity.Additionally,Dr.SupaloservesasavisitingscientistintheDepartmentofChemistryatPurdue.HeisanactivememberintheAmericanChemicalSociety’sChemistswithDisabilities(CWD)committee.Hehasastrongpassionforcollaboratingwithanyoneinterestedinworkingtomakethehands-onsciencelearningexperiencefortheblindareality.
