CSDB Safety Guidelines

In order to maintain a safe environment, it is essential that staff:

  • Read and follow the CSDB Crisis Guidelines.
  • Follow instructions and proper procedures for completion of a given task. If unclear on the procedures, ask your supervisor.
  • Report all employee injuries to your supervisor. Employees must follow workers’ compensation guidelines for obtaining medical treatment.
  • For student and staff injuries and accidents, follow CSDB Policy EBB/EBBB: Accident Prevention/Accident Reports.
  • Do not override the security of any exterior door by wedging or blocking it open.
  • Know where the fire extinguishers are located, read the instructions on the extinguishers. Know what types of fires the extinguishers are for and know how to use them in an emergency.
  • Do not use or work on any machine or equipment until you have received the necessary safety instructions.
  • Guards or safety devices will not be removed from any machine and must always be used. If for any reason a safety device is removed or the machine is defective in any way, do not use the machine until corrections are made by the proper authorities.
  • Do not lift any object heavier than you have the ability to handle easily.
  • Never reach into the garbage disposal or other equipment to retrieve any item unless unit is unplugged from electrical outlet. (Do not rely on power switch or wall switch to disconnect power.)
  • Never climb on a chair or other furniture to reach objects. Use a step-stool or stepladder when appropriate.
  • Never leave extension cords, phone cords or other cords on the floor where anyone can trip on them. Never put cords in midair where people can run into them. If you have cords running across the floor, contact facilities so that alternate routing can be completed.
  • Never plug a multi-outlet strip in to another multi-outlet strip.
  • If you spill anything, you must clean it up immediately; waiting for somebody else to clean it up creates a slip hazard.
  • Report any hazardous spills to your supervisor immediately.
  • Always turn off appliances after use or at the end of the day, especially coffee makers and space heaters. Appliances left on can cause a fire.
  • ALWAYS “test the load” before you actually lift it. Feel how heavy it is before deciding to lift an item.
  • Student transfers should ALWAYS be performed according to individual student needs.
  • Lift with your body, NOT with your back. NEVER bend over to lift. Keep you back as straight as possible.
  • When needed, get your co-workers to help you lift. Always agree on how to lift before actually lifting. Lift ONLY what you can handle without straining yourself.
  • Use lifting aids when appropriate. Never lift by yourself what you can get a machine to do for you.
  • Don’t jerk or twist your body. If you want to change direction, move your feet instead.
  • If you are engaged in any activity where eye hazards such as flying particles, corrosive substances or blinding light exist, use suitable eye protection such as goggles or face shield.
  • Where equipment is equipped with a three-prong plug, it should be plugged into a three-hole electrical receptacle. Never remove third prong from plug.
  • Don’t use power equipment in damp or wet locations.
  • Attend all required safety training per your supervisor.
  • Follow safe practices when using internet and participating in online activities.

Trainings may include:

  • CPR/First Aid/AED
  • Back Injury Prevention/Proper Lifting
  • Office Ergonomics
  • Slips, Trips, Falls
  • Repetitive Motion Injury Prevention
  • Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Child Protection
  • Driver Training
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Internet Safety
