Community Pharmacy Enhanced Service

  1. Service description

1.1.The pharmacy will provide access to its services during an extended period of opening to ensure that people have prompt access to medicines during the out of hours period (whether for the whole or part of that period).

1.2.This service is over and above the dispensing service provided within Essential services.

1.3.This service is an Enhanced service under the community pharmacy contractual framework.

1.4.The service is to be provided by community pharmacies located within the boundaries of NHS Sefton.

  1. Aims and intended service outcomes

2.1.To improve access for patients to medicines when they are required by ensuring prompt access and continuity of supply.

2.2.To support people, carers and clinicians by providing them with information and advice on medicines and referral to other sources of assistance where appropriate.

  1. Service outline

3.1.The pharmacy will supply medicines in response to the presentation of NHS prescriptions, users of Care at the Chemist and requests for over the counter sales.

3.2.The pharmacy contractor has a duty to ensure that pharmacists and staff involved in the provision of the service have relevant knowledge and are appropriately trained in the operation of the service.

3.3.The pharmacy contractor has a duty to ensure that pharmacists and staff involved in the provision of the service are aware of and operate within local protocols.

3.4.The pharmacy should maintain appropriate records to ensure effective ongoing service delivery and audit. These shall include the total number of prescription items dispensed, items supplied through Care at the Chemist, number of clients supplied emergency hormonal contraception and number of emergency supplies made either at the request of a GP or patient.

3.5.The pharmacy commits to open its premises to allow public access to pharmaceutical services for the time and on the dates specified in Appendix 1.

3.6.The pharmacy will be required to open its premises as above at intervals determined by NHS Sefton. The number of openings in a given time period will be dependant on the number of pharmacies in each locality of the PCT.

  1. Quality Indicators

4.1.The pharmacy reviews its standard operating procedures and the referral pathways for the service on an annual basis.

4.2.The pharmacy participates in an annual PCT organised audit of service provision. This audit is in addition to those to be undertaken under the essential services of the community pharmacy contractual framework.

4.3.The pharmacy co-operates with any locally agreed PCT-led assessment of service user experience.

  1. Payments and claims

5.1.Payment will be at a rate specified in Appendix 3

5.2.Payments for provision of services will be made following submission of the appropriate claims form. Pharmacies in Formby should use the Formby claim form (appendix 4). All other pharmacies should use the claims form in Appendix 5

5.3.Claims forms should be submitted on a quarterly basis for pharmacies located in Formby. Other pharmacies should submit the claims form at the end of each month in which they provided the rota service.

  1. Duration and termination

6.1.This agreement shall commence 1st April 2009 and shall continue until notice is given by NHS Sefton that the service is to be discontinued.

6.2.A period of notice shall be no less than 90 days
