Course Content
This course is a performance based ensemble. Participation is by consent of the instructor.
Requirements and Grading
This course is offered for an A-F grade for 1 credit or on an S/U basis for 0 credit. The course grade will be determined as follows: As this is an experience-based course, attendance is crucial and expected. Attendance will be taken and absences will result in a lowering of the course grade at my discretion. Please let me know if you are ill. If you miss a dress rehearsal or a concert you will fail the class. The schedule for the entire semester will be available at the start of each semester. Please notify me of all conflicts at that time!Lab conflicts are a fact of life at CSB/SJU. If you have one cycle day lab conflict with orchestra, you may still take the class for credit (but will sit in the back). If you have two cycle day labs, you may not participate in orchestra. Do not schedule studio lessons during orchestra rehearsals.
Music Performance Award Recipients:
Students receiving music awards are required to participate in an ensemble. Successful participation (including attendance) is necessary for continuance of your music award. String-playing music scholarship recipients must make every effort to avoid orchestra conflicts as this is the only ensemble that fulfills the scholarship compliance requirement.
Seating/Auditions
Auditions take place in the fall prior to the first rehearsal (everybody plays). Seating is at the discretion of the instructor and seating assignments will generally differ from concert to concert (rotation). Assignments will generally be made prior to the first rehearsal of new material.
Auditions Sign-up sheets are posted on Arnott’s door. Please have 2 minutes of solo playing, a scale, and an excerpt prepared.
*Violins: To be considered for the first violin section, you must be comfortable and capable through 7th position (high A on the E string). I will be happy to evaluate/help anyone who would like to be considered for the first violin rotation.
*Seating preference will be given to students without lab conflicts. Section principals may miss only one rehearsal before being reassigned.
SharePoint
Recordings or orchestra repertoire may be found on the Orchestra SharePoint site here: https://sharepoint.csbsju.edu/teams/orchestra/default.aspxYou are expected to be quite familiar with these recordings very quickly!
Rehearsals/Attendance
Rehearsals should be viewed the same as class periods and attendance is not optional. If you miss 3 rehearsals you will not play the concert (excepting lab conflicts). Section leaders will take attendance every rehearsal. Tuning begins promptly at 1:05. Please be ready to play (3 “lates” = 1 absence). Generally one or two evening dress rehearsals will be held for each concert. If you have a night-class conflict, then you will be excused from that rehearsal, otherwise consider it mandatory. Notify me of any conflicts with night classes at the beginning of the semester! A missed concert is an automatic fail.
This is an ensemble (French for “together”) but it is also a class. Students are expected to prepare their parts outside of rehearsal (practice) so that we may assemble the parts in rehearsal rather than learn them in rehearsal.
