14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
Function at the entry/intermediate/experienced level to perform or oversee engineering technical support activities statewide, including drilling soil borings, coring, and in-situ materials testing. Perform technical and/or automated drafting activities in such specialized areas as geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, for the purpose of laying out and preparing soil boring log sheet drawings for new or existing facilities, roadways, bridges, property and maps. Perform surveying technical work of a variety of surveying activities related to geotechnical, geoenvironmental, and coring investigations for roads, building sites, bridges, environmental sites. Perform routine maintenance on drilling and other specialized equipment used for geotechnical investigations. Train seasonal employees.

Duty 1

General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 85
Assist the crew chief in conducting statewide boring operations. Collect subsurface information for design, construction and environmental investigations. Advance borings, collect soil samples, field classify soil and rock, and perform in-situ field tests. Perform crew chief's responsibilities in his absence. Assist with laboratory testing of soil samples for classification and engineering properties.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Assist the crew chief in drilling soil borings.
·  Transport and maintain drilling equipment
·  Operate the drill and advance the boring.
·  Assemble and dismantle augers, drill rods, sampling or test equipment and all related support equipment.
·  Collect, process, and prepare soil samples for transport.
·  Field classify soil and rock.
·  Conduct field tests to determine soil strength and in place density.
·  Traffic Control/Layout Work.
·  Monitor and record groundwater levels.
·  Input and plot soil boring information using geotechnical software.

Duty 2

Assist the crew chief in conducting statewide coring operations. Layout and collect bridge deck and pavement cores for design, quality assurance, or special investigations. Perform crew chief's responsibilities in his absence. Assist transport of core samples for testing.

Perform entry/intermediate/experienced level surveying technical work of a variety of surveying activities that provide assistance in the surveying of roads, building sites, bridges, environmental sites.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  May perform a variety of survey work assignments including measuring distance and elevations, running rods for benches & cross section elevations, searching for section corners, property irons & survey points, & cutting brush for lines.
·  Record measurements & descriptive data of stations, offsets, GPS unit operations, and elevation surveying, in various forms & formats .
·  Perform calculations & computations of recorded measurements.
·  Participate in laying out grids & determining horizontal & vertical controls.
·  Analyze & compare computations with standards set forth by department policy.
·  Document survey findings & delineation of lines & boundaries as found & set, using drawings, sketches, & inked tracings.
·  Operate precise & automatic digital automatic levels and GPS receivers.
·  Use an electronic data collector to record survey data.
·  Record field data in field book using legible writing and directly into computer input forms.
·  Maintain & clean survey instruments, tools & vehicles.
·  Train seasonal & other employees.

Supervisors review is required when there is a deviation from an established procedure or when new situations arise which have not been dealt with before.

May be required to work extended hours (standard work schedule 8 hours per day/5 days per week) and may work nights or other altered shift hours. Requires the ability to work in confined spaces, walk and climb on irregular & steep terrain and/or high structures. Requires ability to safely and properly use hazardous chemicals (storage of containers, applications requiring safety equipment respirators, hearing & eye protection, rubber gloves & protective clothing). Exposure to weather, traffic & construction hazards, noise, dirt, concrete & bit materials & other conditions associated with heavy construction. Requires ability to drive a motor vehicle and overnight travel is required. Ability to transport items weighing up to 50 lbs.

25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function?
This Section conducts geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigations and provides engineering recommendations to various units within the department. Geotechnical, coring, and geoenvironmental information is necessary for planning, design. and construction of transportation facilities. This position performs basic, intermediate, and/or experienced level work in geotechnical subsurface exploration, in-situ testing and bridge deck/pavement coring.
26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position?
EDUCATION:
Possession of an associate’s degree in civil, construction, or surveying technology. Four years construction/engineering technician experience consisting of materials & testing may be substituted for the associate’s degree. or Completion of 60 semesters (90 term) credits incl. 8 semester (12 term) credits mathematics & 24 semester (36 term) credits in any combination of course work in at least three of the following areas: structures, materials, soils, hydrology, surveying, drafting or design, bituminous, concrete, aggregates, chemistry, physics, geology, environmental or computer science, or thermodynamics may be substituted for the associate’s degree. or Possession of a BS degree or higher with 16 semester (24 term) credits in job specific or related course work.
EXPERIENCE:
Transportation Tech 8: No specific type or amount is required.
Transportation Tech 9: One year of experience as a Transportation Technician 8.
Transportation Tech 10: Two years of experience as a Transportation Technician including one year equivalent to a Transportation Technician 9.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of math; proper use of equipment; safety practices; terminology; computer input forms & proper formatting of data; English/metric conversion factors. Skill in use of testing equipment. Ability to compute areas/volumes; work on high structures; walk on uneven terrain; stand for long periods of time; communicate effectively; maintain favorable public relations; use computer programs; carry equipment/materials; work under extreme weather & environmental conditions; conduct tests; read/interpret design/construction plans/specifications; conduct field investigations/prepare recommendations; maintain records; prepare reports; understand/carry out detailed, technical instructions; read/interpret design/construction plans/specifications; operate equipment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of a valid Driver's License.
Possession of a valid CDL Group A with air brakes and N or X Endorsement.
