Creative Writing 2 2015 – 2016
REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS
What You Will Need Each Day:
- Your writer's notebook. This can be a non-loose leaf notebook of your choosing, something you are comfortable with and which enables you to freely engage in the writing process. Generally, an 8 ½ “ by 11” 70 page spiral notebook will work well. (Note: You may choose to keep an electronic notebook; however, you must have the technology to access it with you every day, and you must be able to print it out for me to see).
- A folder for handouts and work in progress.
- A blue or black pen for writing and a colored pen for editing.
- Any homework assigned.
- Your interest and enthusiasm for this class! This is an ELECTIVE, so my assumption is that you all are here because you want to be fully engaged in the processes of writing.
What I Expect:
- Come to class on time, prepared to participate actively in our writing community. Bring your writer's notebook and a writing implement every day. Please be in your seat when the bell rings at the start of class.
- Do not bring food or beverages, other than water, in a clear container, to class. If we are using the laptops, NO bottles of any sort may be on the desks.
- Remain focused on writing during our workshops. Understand that others need quiet in order to focus; don't do anything to distract your classmates or me. This includes using cell phones!!
- Use the bathroom responsibly. Only one student may leave the room at a time.
- Find topics and purposes for your writing that matter to you, to your life, to who you are and who you want to become.
- Take risks! Try new topics, purposes, audiences, genres, forms, and techniques. Be willing to write badly in order to write well!
- READ! The best way to learn to write is to find writers you like and learn from them.
- Be the first responder to your work. Make your own decisions about what is working and needs more work in your pieces of writing.
- Respectfully listen to, ask questions about, and comment on others' writing. I expect EVERYONE to actively participate—that means sharing work AND commenting on others’ work.
- Adhere to deadlines for drafts and submit work on time. Most work will be submitted both in hard copy and on Turnitin.com. Work must be submitted at the start of class.
- Attempt publication.
- Be respectful towards everyone else in class. Understand that in order to have a workshop that truly works, everyone has to feel safe sharing his or her work.
How You Will Be Evaluated:
- PROCESS: You will receive credit for observing the expectations noted above. Points will be deducted for lack of preparation and purpose during class. Specifically:
- Timely submission of work:
All work must be submitted on time and, when required, also submitted to Turnitin.com by 7:00 a.m. on the due date. Late assignments will be downgraded 20% the first day and an additional 10% per day for the next two days. After the third day, the assignment will not earn credit. A submission to Turnitin.com is not a substitution for a paper copy.
If you are absent because of a field trip or other school function (e.g., guidance appointment), you still must submit your work to me on the day it is due. You may put it in my mailbox or bring it to me before or after school.
If you miss a class but are not absent from school, you are responsible for any assignments due the next day. Refer to my teacher page or contact me if you need to be updated about what you have missed.
- Class Participation: The success of this class depends on your good faith
participation in the process. Failure to comply with any of the following will
result in a loss of points:
being prepared for class each day
focusing on writing in class.
sharing your work.
providing helpful feedback to others.
- PRODUCT – This includes:
- following instructions for specific assignments.
- demonstrating understanding of skills and elements of craft that have been taught.
- paying attention to my comments and comments of your peers in revision.
- proofreading and editing your final drafts. If you struggle with this aspect of writing, take advantage of the writing lab or see me before or after school to review your work.
- following rules for written work (see below).
Rules for Written Work:
- Your typed work should include a standard heading in the upper left hand corner as follows:
Your name
CW 2
Date
Draft #
- Center title
- All typed work should be in #12 Times New Roman font. This is standard for publishing. Poems should be single spaced. Prose should be double spaced.
- Drafts should be stapled together with the most recent draft on top. Any conferencing forms should be attached to the appropriate draft.
