Creating MCA Math Minutes with your Students

First decide which problem(s) you will do. Post this information to the “For the Teacher” page so another class doesn’t so the same problem(s).

1.  Log on to connect.spps.org/mcamath and click on “For the Teacher.” The password is: learning

2.  Take a look at the problems other teachers have already sign up to do with their students.

3.  Enter “learning” in the log on box at the bottom and click “Go.”

4.  Click to Add item.

5.  In the Title field type your grade level. In the Summary field type the segment and problems you will do with your students, your name and your school name.

6.  Copy the information in the Summary field and paste it in the Body field. Click Save.

7.  Click on the red dot to turn on your item (it will change to green).

8.  Click Logout.

Second have your student solve the problem and practice their presentation. Then film it.

1.  Go to connect.spps.org/mcamath and click on your grade to view the entire list of problems.

2.  Click on your problem, then click again on the problem itself to enlarge it.

3.  Take the digital camera, turn it on, make sure the selection wheel is turned to movie.

4.  Lights, camera, and….. Action!

5.  The camera should hold about 90 seconds or so. If you need to, delete your movie and try again.

6.  Your students should start by saying “I’m _(their name)_ from _(your school)_ and I’m going to show you how I solved today’s MCA Math Minute.”

Third you’ll need to get the movie off the camera. Here’s how to do that:

1.  With the camera turned off, hook up the cord supplied in the box using the USB cord to attach to your computer. Turn the camera on.

2.  iPhoto should launch by itself, if it doesn’t open it. When you see ”Ready to import one item” click the Import button.

3.  Drag the movie out of your iPhoto library and onto your desktop. It will be called MOV00032.MPG or something like that.

4.  Eject the camera and turn it off. You’ll have to delete the movie from the camera to make space for the next one.

5.  To preview your movie simply click on it (it’s on your desktop, remember?)

Fourth step is to upload it to the correct spot on the MCA Math Minute website. To do that:

1.  Go to connect.spps.org/admin. Enter the username: mcamath and password: learning

2.  Click on the section you want (ex: 7th Grade Math Pract…).

3.  In the list of items, find the Segment and Problem # that you filmed. Click on the blue “edit” button for that item.

4.  On the left-hand side click “Video.” Click add new, then browse and find the video on your desktop. Choose it and click upload.

5.  Once it uploads type “click to play” in the description field. Click apply, click apply again, then click save.

6.  Click logout. You are done.
