Creating a TCQE Paragraph

Up until this point when we have done TCQE assignments, I have provided you with a THEME word or a THESIS statement that you have used to find a quote, provide the context, and explain the connection.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You have graduated from the single TCQE activities to the FULL TCQE PARAGRAPH!

For this assignment, you are going to create ONE topic sentence that will provide insight into the story and you will then support that topic sentence with three quotes (one from the beginning, one from the middle, and one from the end). You will develop the paragraph even further with both context and explanation for EACH quote.

Let’s get started….

First, you need to pick a story/author that you will use to focus your paragraph.

When choosing, consider the following: your topic sentence will need to reveal an insight you have into a literary element within it, so it needs to be a story & literary element with which you are comfortable.

CIRCLE WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING YOU WILL USE:

Story Options:

“The Most Dangerous Game” “Lamb to the Slaughter”

“The Lottery” “Stop the Sun”

Literary Element Options:

Characterization

Plot (3-4 events)

Other: setting, foreshadowing, symbolism, irony, conflict, mood (PICK ONE)

Then, you will need to write a thesis statement. The following are some samples of thesis statements. Feel free to use ANY of them for inspiration!

Characterization: Rainsford is a dynamic character in Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game.”

Literary Element: Richard Connell uses foreshadowing to develop the plot in his story “The Most Dangerous Game.”

Plot: “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has a very exciting and intriguing plotline.

NOTICE: A good topic sentence DOES NOT provide a plot summary; it provides insight into the way the author wrote the story.

Now, write your idea for a thesis statement (include: title, author, and topic choice):

Last, look through the story and make sure you have ideas to use for your quotes. You should have a minimum of three quotes.

These quotes should come from DIFFERENT parts of the story. They should also be no longer than 2 lines in length (if they are longer, we will need to work to cut them down).

Please put the page number of the quote here and be prepared to tell me what it is and why you picked it. You do NOT have to write out the entire quote!

(Beginning third of the story)

QUOTE 1 & page #:

(Middle third of the story)

QUOTE 2 & page #:

(Ending third of the story)

QUOTE 3 & page #:

WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, I NEED TO OKAY YOUR WORK & GIVE YOU THE NEXT STEP….
