OPTIONAL CREATING A REPUBLIC—CONSTITUTION PORTFOLIO

One major grade for this unit will be the compilation of a “Creating the Republic” Portfolio. This is to be done individually and should show much effort!! Put your best work into your portfolio. Be proud of what you create and remember that this information is going to prove useful for the REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!

Do ALL of the following on the corresponding pages in your portfolio:

Page One: Create a cover for your portfolio that includes the title, your name, the class, and the date. Also

include a picture, a quote, a political cartoon, or some other comment on the Unite States

Constitution.

Page Two: Complete a biographical sketch of a key player at the Constitutional Convention. Include his

name, a description of his role at the convention, his birth and death dates, and his home

state. You should also describe the previous or future importance of this key player to US

History.

Page Three: Create a chart contrasting the FEDERALISTS and the ANTI-FEDERALISTS. Include

members (both general and specific), ideas and beliefs of each group, and any strengths

or weaknesses of each in their campaign.

Page Four: Create a chart listing the qualifications for President, Senator, and Representative in the House.

Include the minimum age, years in term, number of terms possible, number of years they

must be a citizen of USA, and the number of years they must live in their district, state, or

country.

Page Five: Read the Bill of Rights (the First Ten Amendments) in your textbook. Notice that the book

provides explanations in the columns for your benefit. After reading them, illustrate each

of the ten amendments. You can cut and paste or use original art.

Do THREE of the following. These choices should be pages Six, Seven, and Eight in your portfolio:

  1. Include a well-written paragraph on the Federalist Papers. This could feature your discussion of the contents, highlight one of the authors, or the overall influences of these documents.
  1. List the Six Purposes of the Constitution given in the Preamble. Illustrate THREE of these (cut and paste or original art.)
  1. Define Federalism and create a chart or flow chart including THREE powers held by the federal government, state governments, and shared powers.
  1. Explain the steps in the process for Amending the Constitution.
  1. Choose FIVE of the remaining amendments (eleven through twenty-seven) that you think are the most important to you today and explain why you think each is important.

***Your final portfolio should be 8 pages total.

SCORING:

The Portfolio will be worth 40 points as a summative assessment grade. Each page will be worth 5 pts and will be graded for accuracy, following the directions of the assignment (completing the requirements), creativity, neatness, and originality.
