Crafts Council Services to Makers in Scotland (CRA2)

The Scottish Arts Council’s partnership with the Crafts Council in London enables makers and venues in Scotland to benefit from a wide range of Crafts Council activity

Crafts Council

The Crafts Council’s new vision for the future will focus on the following areas:

  • working in partnership with other cultural venues to present contemporary craft activities
  • working much more visibly and effectively across the country
  • strengthening the profile and awareness of craft in a number of ways, including through a new website and through the development of a number of information channels
  • working to help shape the future of craft in education through formal and informal learning and continuing professional development activities

The work of makers based in Scotland is considered for:

  • Scottish contemporary craftwork is reported in Crafts Magazine
  • Inclusion in Crafts Council exhibitions and showcases
  • Purchase to the Crafts Council Collection
  • Training opportunities for recipients of Scottish Arts Council Start Up award
  • Training events for makers on exhibiting and selling crafts at trade fairs

Origin The London Craft Fair at Somerset House, London

A presentation of the very best of craft talent. Exhibitors are a mixture of established names and emerging talent, who all show work of a consistently high standard, and demonstrate creativity and technical skill. Applications are invited from UK and international designer-makers of contemporary craft. In 2006 Origin featured a strong representation of Scottish designer makers. Briefing days for new exhibitors are held in London and Edinburgh as part of the support package for exhibitors. Applications for Origin 2007 have closed but will reopen for Origin 2008 in January.

The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects

At the V&A, London

25-29 January 2008

A selection of prestigious applied and decorative arts galleries from around the globe exhibiting museum quality works by over 350 international craft artists in the unequalled setting of the V&A, London. Applications are invited from UK and international craft and applied art galleries and artist groups. The 2007 show included the Scottish Gallery and a showcase presentation by Dovecot Tapestry Studio. Additional Scottish artists were represented by galleries based outside of Scotland.

COLLECTion London and Edinburgh

January 2008

A programme of special lectures, events and activitiesto coincide with COLLECT. A special feature of eventswill take place in Edinburgh to celebrate the presentation of the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2007: Jewellery at the National Museums of Scotland.

Crafts Council at the V&A Showcase Programme

Situated in the V&A’s main shop and presented in partnership with the V&A Enterprises, the showcase programme presents work for sale from some of the most prestigious craftspeople working in the UK.

Retail Development

Scottish craft and applied arts shops and galleries will be invited to a networking event for craft retailers to be held during Origin 2007

New YorkInternational Gift Fair

A major international trade fair for the commercial sector. The Crafts Council acts as official sponsor for groups of British designer makers exhibiting at the Fair, with subsidy provided by UK Trade & Investment.

Several Scottish makers have taken part over the past few years.

Crafts Council Exhibitions and Maker Events in Scotland

Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2007: Jewellery

The shortlist of six selected makers includes the work of two Edinburgh based artists: Susan Cross and Grainne Morton.

As part of the touring programme for this prestigious exhibition, it will be on show at National MuseumsScotland, Edinburgh from October 14 to2 March 2008. Accompanying events will be arranged.

Spark Plug Awards

The Crafts Council is delighted to announce the launch of a new Award scheme for curators. The annual Spark Plug Curator Award scheme will enable successful applicants to each receive a £5,000 Award (inclusive). The Spark Plug Curator Award scheme aims to provide each year a minimum of four selected curators the opportunity to develop an ambitious and innovative exhibition project. There is the potential for one award of £5,000 to be funded by the Scottish Arts Council and to be presented to a Scottish curator, on selection of an appropriate application. The scheme is open to curators across the UK with innovative exhibition projects.

Alternative Presence: collecting, interpreting and the display of contemporary craft in the 21st Century.

Crafts Council’s annual Crafts Curators’ Conference:

This free conference is hosted by mima and developed by the Crafts Council and mima for curators working with contemporary design, craft and applied art collections.

General applications

  • Makers based in Scotland may apply for Next Move.
  • Makers based in Scotland may attend any open Crafts Council Professional development talks or forums, such as those days held at New Designers.
  • Mid career and established makers based in Scotland may apply for the Crafts Council - V&A Craft Residency as part of an open submission process.
  • Scottish Higher Education Institutions will be invited to join the Applied Arts HEI group to be launched in 2007.
  • Scottish Professional Development Agencies will be invited to attend the planned forum for national PD agencies.

Other services for Scottish makers and venues

National Register of Makers

The National Register of Makers is a listing of those in Great Britain working in contemporary crafts. The database is made available to the English Regional Arts Offices, Arts Council of Wales and the Scottish Arts Council. The associated file of picture cards is available for use at the Crafts Council Reference Library. The reference library is currently closed but will reopen later in 2007. A remote enquiries service is available Tuesday – Friday 020 7806 2501.

Photostore Online®

Photostore Online® contains images of work by craftspeople on the Crafts Council’s list of Photostore Selected Makers, by recent recipients of Crafts Council Development Awards and Scottish Arts Council Start Up awards, and pieces purchased for the Crafts Council Collection. Enquirers can search online for images and information by maker, object, material and technique. Makers in Scotland are eligible for selection for Photostore.
