UNITS OF STUDY
- Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.
- Demonstrate standard safety practices for all classroom, laboratory, and field experiences. Understand existing and potential hazards and prevent injury or illness through safe work practices by following policies and procedures.
- Describe how various healthcare roles fit into the office/department, the organization and the overall healthcare environment.
- Develop a Career Plan
- Evaluate the impact of diversity and ethics on healthcare delivery
- Demonstrate an understanding of the legal responsibilities, limitations, and implications of their actions within the healthcare delivery setting.
- Identify and demonstrate the various methods of providing and obtaining information from patients, family members, other agencies, and other members of the healthcare team
- Practice preventive health behaviors personally and professionally
- Analyze different types of microorganisms and their defining characteristics to reduce the risk of infection or illness. Demonstrate the physiochemical methods and the use of PPE in preventing and controlling the spread of microbial growth.
- Introduction to Healthcare Communication
- Demonstrate CPR, First Aid, and the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) utilizing current standards
- Describe the stages of development from birth to adulthood (i.e. neonatal period, infancy, childhood, adolescence and puberty, adulthood, and geriatrics)
- Utilize information technology applications required within all career specialties.
- Apply mathematical computations related to healthcare procedures
- Explore how related student organizations are integral parts of career and technology education courses through leadership development, school and community service projects, entrepreneurship development, and competitive events.
CODE OF CONDUCT
1.Treat other people the way you would want to be treated in their situation. This includes students, teachers, substitute teachers, guest speakers, and other visitors to the classroom.
2.Raise your hand to gain the instructor’s attention or to ask a question or make a comment. Lower your hand once you have been acknowledged. You may also call the instructor by name using a normal tone of voice when in the skills lab area.
3.Be in your seat and prepared to start work quietly before the tardy bell rings. Being prepared means you have both paper and a writing utensil.
4. Use appropriate language (no cursing or slang words) and speak in a respectful tone of voice.
5.Sleeping or putting your head down in class is not permitted.
6.Personal grooming (hair brushing, applying make-up etc.) is not permitted.
HEALTHCARE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION SAFETY GUIDELINES
1. Monitoring safety is everyone’s responsibility. All safety violations must be reported immediately.
2. Entrance into the skills lab area without permission is not permitted.
3. Operating equipment without permission or safety instructions first is not allowed.
4. Any equipment found to be damaged or in poor working order must be reported to the teacher immediately.
5. Students are responsible for any repair costs or replacement of equipment that results from negligence or willful destruction in the classroom.
6. Horseplay is not allowed. This means no throwing, pulling chairs out from other individuals, running, scuffling, or fighting.
7. All classroom accidents must be reported to the teacher immediately.
8. All students are required to take a safety test and obtain a passing score prior to working in the skills lab area.
