APPLIED LINGUISTICS
Catalog Description:
English 16 - Applied Linguistics 3 units
Introduction to the structure of the English language and its application to academic and professional writing. Focus on logical construction of the sentence and levels of diction. Introduction to the cultural, psychological and literary functions of language. Strongly recommended: eligibility for English 1A. 3 hours.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
1. utilize various theories which describe language so that they can recognize and manipulate the components of the English sentence;
2. utilize knowledge of parts of speech and basic sentence patterns to construct effective sentences and to combine basic sentences into compound and complex sentences;
3. effectively revise sentences through an analysis of grammatical errors;
4. develop and extend proofreading skills in order to improve the force, logic and clarity of their prose;
5. appreciate the complexity and significance of language.

1. Theoretical approaches to grammar study including transformational, structural and traditional
2. Application of these theoretical approaches to students' writing
3. Revision strategies, including editing and proofreading
4. Overview of interdisciplinary approaches to language
5. Linguistic analysis of literary texts
