Catalog Description: This class will provide students with classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience. Successful completion fulfills the requirements for eligibility to take the State Certified Nursing Assistant Examination.

Prerequisite: Must show proof of current negative 2-step TB test or a negative chest x-ray, a current Basic Life Support, CPR card, and must submit a drug screen and background check.

Uniforms – You must wear a uniform in the clinical area. Scrubs can be worn. Socks are worn with pant uniforms and must be white. Shoes must be clean and white. A wristwatch with a second hand is required. You will need your uniforms before Feb. 14, 2015.

Course Description: The course is designed to introduce the student to the health care field of a nursing assistant. It will provide students with classroom, practical (laboratory) and clinical experience to develop the basic competencies required for certification as a nursing assistant. It will also provide the student with knowledge and skills that are prerequisite to job entry and that comply with both Nevada State Statutes and the federal law. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be eligible to apply for the Nevada State Certification Examination that this required for employment as a nursing assistant.

Learner Outcomes: Nursing assistant education strives to prepare individuals with skills necessary for safe and competent practice and the skills necessary for certification as specified by Nevada Revised Statutes and required for employment as a nursing assistant. Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Define the role of a nursing assistant.
  2. Describe the responsibilities of a nursing assistant.
  3. Perform specified skills required to function as a member of the health care team.
  4. Demonstrate safe, competent care within the practice guidelines of a nursing assistant.
  5. Provide care in accordance with the rights of every patient.

Method of Instruction: The method of instruction will follow the Nursing Assistant Training Program Model Curriculum Guide for the Nevada State Board of Nursing. The curriculum is divided into 8 units which include objectives, vocabulary and suggested content. The program is a minimum of 120 hours. Classroom and laboratory work must be a minimum of 80 hours and clinical rotation is a minimum of 40 hours. The student must complete a minimum of 40 hours training before being allowed to work in a facility. The clinical training will include the following:

  1. Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  2. Infection Control
  3. Safety/Emergency Procedures including Heimlich Maneuver
  4. Promoting Residents’ Independence
  5. Respecting Residents’ Rights with practice in Methods to Reduce the Use of Restraints

Grading Policy and Criteria:

A 100% is required on ALL skills listed on the Performance Log. Students are permitted to practice skills on the Performance Log until 100% accuracy is achieved. Skills tests on the Performance Log must be given by a registered nurse.

A minimum grade of 80% is required on all written and oral quizzes/tests. Retake up to two times is permitted on all written and oral quizzes/tests. No grade higher than 80% will be given on a retake exam. The nursing assistant curriculum is a competency based curriculum which allows for variation in completion time because of differences in individual learners. However, all requirements must be completed by the end of the scheduled date of the course.

Examinations (Written and Skills) and Assignments:

  1. Manual Skills Demonstration Examination
  2. The student will achieve 100% demonstrating the skills listed on the Performance Log and following the specified steps in the procedure.
  3. The student will demonstrate performance in a professional manner, using appropriate communication and respect for patient’s rights.
  4. A manual skills exam will be given. Basic skills will be demonstrated. The student will not be told which skills he/she will perform prior to the time of the exam. The manual skill demonstration will be in the morning prior to the final examination.
  5. Written Examination:
  6. The student will achieve a minimum of 80% on all of the tests and the final written examination.
  7. If the student has demonstrated great difficulty with written examinations, arrangements can be made to take the exam orally. It is the student’s responsibility to request the oral rather written exam prior to the time of testing.
  8. Ninety minutes is allowed for the final examination.
  9. Group Presentation
  10. The class will be divided into groups and each group will present one or two topics to the rest of the class

Grading Scale:

The following grading scale is used on all grade work or assignments:

A = 100-94% / C+ = 79-77%
A- = 93-90% / C = 76-74%
B+ = 89-87% / C- = 73-70%
B = 86-84% / D = 69-60%
B- = 83-80% / F = 59% and below
