Course Objective: This course is designed for junior undergraduate students in the School of Medicine.To master the basic theory of TCM, the basic method and the basic thinking way of diagnosis and treatment of diseases in TCM.

Course Description::This course systemly explain the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),including the history of TCM and its basic characteristics, the basic thinking way of TCM, theory of yin and yang, zang-fu theory (viscera), qi,blood and body fluid theory, etiology and pathogenesis, four diagnostic methods, syndrome differentiation, prevention and therapeutic principles, an overview of Chinese herbs and prescription, an overview of acupuncture and meridians, etc. In accordance with "a masterstroke " (the basic TCM theory, therapeutic principles, prescription and Chinese herbs----system thinking method of TCM), series "three modules" (composed of three-part: the basic theory, syndrome differentiation, and Treatment principles and prescription based on syndrome), systematically teach the basic Knowledge,basic theory and basic skills of TCM. And base on multiplex knowledge of historical background of TCM, comparison between Chinese and Western medicine,research progress of TCM, etc, with integrative reconciliation teaching method, we could enable students scientificly construct knowledge system of TCM. Through TCM study, students could master the basic theory of TCM, the basic method and the basic thinking way of diagnosis and treatment of diseases in TCM.

Prerequisite:The prerequisite of this course includes, but is not limited to, the knowledge of traditional culture of China and traditional history of China. Those who are not familiar with these knowledge are encouraged to read related text books.

Ways to engage students to the class:Pre-class assginments such as doing researches will be given; In-class discussion based on pre-class assginments will be conducted as often as possible; After-class assignments will be passed out approximately every week. These assignments will include both problem solving and learning more related basic knowledge. Besides, students are encouraged to do practice, which will be done under the clinic tutors. The assignments will be graded by the teacher, and will be reckoned in the whole grading for this course.

Regular grades: 40%.
