Course Description: The goal of mathematics education in the Douglas County School System is to empower all students with a true understanding of real-world mathematics through problem solving, reasoning, and communicating. By using appropriate and varied techniques, we will enable all students to become life-long critical thinkers and confident learners in an ever-changing world. The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) have replaced the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in mathematics, language arts, and reading. The objectives of CCGPS are to provide students with:

  • Rigorous knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and/or careers
  • Consistent expectations across states, regardless of whether they decide to go to school at Georgia Tech or UCLA, or find a job in Georgia, Maine or Indiana
  • Relevant content and application of knowledge through high-order skills

Course Objectives: The seventh grade curriculum objectives are based on the new CCGPS standards written by the Georgia Department of Education. We will be covering the following domains: The Number System, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. You can learn more about CCGPS at georgiastandards.org.

Agenda:I will stamp agendas daily in the "Math" section only when the correct homework message has been written down. I do not collect homework the day it is distributed, so your child should bring homework home each night, with some exceptions. Typically, I do not give homework on Fridays, but can guide you toward additional resources if you would like to have some on hand to work with your child over the weekend. If your child does not have his/her homework, you will see “HW not completed” written or stamped in the agenda. He/she has one additional day to complete the homework with a ten point deduction; otherwise, a zero will be entered in the gradebook until it is completed. Extenuating circumstances, such as illness or death in the family, will be taken into consideration when additional time is needed. Please make sure you communicate such needs with me.

Homework:Homework is one of the most important elements in math. It shows if students have retained information and can work independently. To succeed, students MUST complete homework nightly.

Interactive Notebook: Your child will be keeping an interactive notebook this year. This will serve as a tool to help your student with homework completion as well as test preparation. We will add elements in class, but at times it may be necessary for your student to complete a task at home. It will be kept in the classroom, but may also be sent home from time to time, especially before tests.

Conferences:To schedule a conference or visit my class, write a request in your child's agenda book, leave me a voice message, or send an email. 24 hour notice is required before visiting a classroom during school hours, and must be approved by Dr. Morris.

Infinite Campus: This will be our grading platform for the year. Grades will be entered within seven days of being collected.

Extra Credit: I do not give extra credit. Students who have excused absences have extra time to make up work.

Website: Please bear with me as I update my website and make it more user-friendly. I plan to add helpful links to websites and additional information that will be useful to you and/or your child.
