COSC407: Data Communication and Networks

LAB 4: Remote Desktop Connection (RDC)

1.1 OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lab session the students should be able to:

1.  Share the desktop of a PC within a Local Network of many PCs via wired and wireless connections

2.  Share the desktop of PCs within via the internet

1.2 APPARATUS/SOFTWARE:

Not Applicable

1.3 BACKGROUND:

In Lab5, we have seen how to share documents among connected or networked systems via shared folders. The approach has a limited in the sense that only documents stored on “Public Folders” are shareable.

Remote Desktop Connection application were developed to grant access to users’ desktop. Which by implication means accessing the hard Disk of a Remote System. The need for that may arise when managing some servers that are physically far from the user (Web. Master). Also, a need to maintain a single copy of a document using different PCs might be another key problem to be put into consideration. There are many applications like: ThemeViewer, …, …that are primarily developed to serve this purpose. Though in this lab we will be using the built-in Windows RDC application.

Steps to Setup an RDC:

On Server PC:

a.  Connect to the Internet or create a network

b.  Enable Remote Desktop Connection: Search for “Allow remote…” and enable it

c.  Record the System IP Address or Hostname, Username and Password

On Administrator’s PC

a.  Load RDC: Search for “Remote Desktop connection” and run the Windows built-in application

b.  Use Records from Server in section c. to log onto the server

Exercises:

Q 1. Form a Network of at least 20 PCs on the same Network [Wired or Wireless] and choose a System you want to access its desktop. Create a word document and save with your registration as the file name. Access the system desktop and drop the word document on the user’s PC.

Q 2.
