Principal and Vice Principal’s Report

Brampton Safety Council Minutes:

  • Report recommends moving the ‘1 way sign’ up to front of the school
  • No crossing in front of school buses
  • The forum is open to the public – all welcome to attend the meeting to voice concerns

Crossing Guard Update:

  • No crossing guard to be appointed at this time
  • Ingleborough/Elbern Markell assessed – there were manageable gaps
  • Ingleborough/Creditview to be assessed
  • Police presence available if required/requested – Gurrinder Pawan to arrange
  • Need to encourage parents/children to cross at the right crossing, to increase the chances of getting a crossing guard
  • If drivers are not following road procedures then you can call the police – police will give a friendly reminder to the drivers

Food Drive:

  • 1425 items collected
  • Donation made to Knights Table

Stand Up Bully Day:

  • Assembly was a success
  • Assembly takes place 3rd Friday of every month
  • For December, stand up day will be on 14th December as 21st December will be Spirit day (children want to celebrate holidays)

Remembrance Day Assembly:

  • Held on 9th November

School Social

  • Winter social to be held on 20th December 2012
  • The event is run by the school staff
  • Looking for parent volunteers
  • Last 2 periods of the day
  • Various activities to be offered –
  • Chris Gibson Hockey arena – Gr3-8 Skating (kids bring their own skates and helmets, at a small cost)
  • Cooking – Dessert pizza and marshmallow snow men
  • Table tennis
  • Dance in gym
  • Movie – Primary, junior and intermediate children
  • Snack and Chat
  • Something for everyone - letter to go home to parents to sign up children for the activity

Mitten and Hat Tree:

  • In December – looking for donations of mittens and hats to go to those in need

French Immersion:

  • FI night to be held on 29th Nov for parents of children entering grade 1 in 2013
  • Mon Dictionaire order was placed on Monday 19th Nov
  • 95 orders placed from parents
  • School ordered 108
  • Books to arrive this week

EcoSchool: (Mr Taylor)

  • Mr Taylor is forming an Eco group
  • Includes 9 staff members
  • 2 children representatives from each class from K to Gr8
  • Buddy up younger children with older children
  • First meeting on Friday 23rd Nov
  • Encourage waste minimization, energy conservation, environmental stewardship
  • Establish good habits
  • Encourage litter less lunch and re-useable containers
  • Children develop team leadership skills
  • School is becoming greener – looking for certification
  • Outdoor learning area
  • Work with local authorities
  • Community involvement - Parent volunteers can email the school
  • Ewaste program in Spring – Recycle and Reuse – Raise money for technology

Accounting Update

  • In January, balance sheet from fundraisers will be available and communicated to all parents

Toys for Tots - Hockey Game 26th November 2012:

  • 160 children to attend the event
  • Staff and parent volunteers to attend
  • Children to bring an unwrapped toy

Toys Drive for Children:

  • To be held in December – children bring in an unwrapped toy for charity

Social Committee:

  • Looking for parent volunteers to help with school social events i.e. Winter Social to support teachers on the day
  • School to send sign up sheets home

Fundraising Committee:

  • Looking for parent volunteers to come up with ideas for 2 major fund raising events
  • Committee to do some research and present at the next parent council meeting
  • Vote for the preferred event at the parent council meeting and determine with the help of staff where the funds should go
  • Parents can volunteer by sending email to parent council

Highly Effective Habits:

  • Will take place in January and note will be sent home to parents

Q&A – Other Issues

  • SynerVoice – Ensure all contact details are up to date with Mariyln in the school office. Parents have not received calls (emails only) – Sara to follow up
  • Front Door needs some sort of security – too easy to walk into school
  • YMCA security is a concern – door is propped open. Not very safe for children or staff. Security to be addressed
  • My Class website – some teachers have sites, others do not yet. Work in progress
  • Parent/Teacher interviews – do not apply for JK children – parents asked to come in and observe the children during school time
  • Parent/Teacher interviews – for SK children will take place in January
  • Call teachers directly if you have any questions/concerns
  • Ted Talk - Some parents had concerns about no worksheets used in the classrooms, questioned whether this applied to Math only or all subjects
  • Working on interactive learning
  • Working on skills/balance
  • Teach concepts based on interactive learning
  • Do use text books
  • Peel board website has some useful links for homework help (support with homework)
  • No Christmas concert planned for this year
