About Tommy’s

Tommy’s was started in 1992 by two Obstetricians who wanted to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for all. We don’t know enough about why pregnancies go wrong, and so it is not surprising that:

•1 in 4 women will have a miscarriage

•Around 4,000 babies will be stillborn every year

•60,000 babies are born prematurely every year. It is the leading cause of neonatal death in the UK.

Each baby lost represents a tragedy for the family concerned. It touches the lives of almost every household in the UK. We are also concerned about the lifelong implications suffered by many children who are born too soon or too small.

Tommy’s exists to change all this. We are now the largest UK charity funding medical research into the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth. We also provide pregnancy health information to parents

Tommy’s funds four centres of maternal and fetal health, one in London at St Thomas’ Hospital, one in Manchester at St Mary’s Hospital and another in Edinburgh at the Royal Infirmary. The fourth, Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage, opened in April 2016 and is a partnership between three universities (The University of Birmingham, The University of Warwick, and Imperial College London). It will help 24,000 women with recurrent miscarriages each year.

The charity employs around 30 employees and we currently raise c. £4.5m a year.

Our Patrons are Tom and Sara Parker Bowles and our Trustees cover a wide variety of interests from medicine to banking to media and even sport.

Tommy’s has embarked on an exciting new strategy which will see the charity double in size in the next 3-5 years; reach every pregnant woman with relevant pregnancy information and increase the scale and impact of our medical research programmes. One of our key goals to achieve this will be to increase our awareness amongst our potential supporters.

We are a go-ahead charity with a cause which deeply touches many people. We still find time to enjoy what we do!
