The post for an Orthopaedic Surgeon with an speciality interest in Lower limb Arthroplasty is being recruited to at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The Royal Alexandra Hospital provides an extensive range of acute health services to the Renfrew District and beyond, with a population in excess of 300,000. The Orthopaedic Department consists of 11 Consultants, covering a range of elective Specialist Interests in Orthopaedic, as well as provision of Trama Services (1:9 On Call) to one of the busiest Trauma units in Scotland. The role for Lower limb Arthroplasty Consultant Surgeon will be to work with colleagues, and assist in the management of complex Lower limb Arthroplasty Surgery to complement the services / demand on Orthopaedic Services for Patients referred from GP’s or colleagues’, and will also provide expert advice / support re Complex Arthroplasty Patients presenting to the Trauma Service provided at the Hospital.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INFORMATION
The RoyalAlexandraHospital provides an extensive range of acute health services to the Renfrew District and beyond, with a population in excess of 300,000.
The Hospital first opened in 1986, although the Maternity Unit was established on site in 1970. The RoyalAlexandraHospital has a current bed complement of 670 including facilities for Care of the Elderly. Also on site are facilities for Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry under the management of Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership.
Employing over 2,000 staff, the RoyalAlexandraHospital is one of the largest and most modern of its kind in Scotland. In any one year, the Hospital treats over 38,000 inpatients and over 123,000 outpatients and 14,000 day cases. Approximately 64,000 people were seen in Accident and Emergency and there were 3229 births in the Maternity Unit. The Hospital has developed excellent links with tertiary centres in Glasgow and has a well-founded reputation for providing a high standard of medical teaching and postgraduate medical education facilities.
As part of the largest NHS Provider in the United Kingdom, practitioners based at the RoyalAlexandraHospital provide acute services for Paisley and surrounding area along with some specialist services for Inverclyde, Argyll and West Dunbartonshire.
The town of Paisley, situated less than 10 miles to the West of Glasgow, is known worldwide for its historical contribution to the textile industry. Although its links with the industry are now a thing of the past, Paisley remains the largest town in Scotland. It is unique in terms of ease of accessibility to the cultural and culinary delights of Glasgow, as well as to the scenic and recreational attractions of the West of Scotland. There are excellent road and public transport links with the rest of Scotland and with the progressive upgrading of the main road route to England, journeys to locations south of the border are becoming ever easier. Glasgow Airport (average flight time to London Heathrow – one hour) is located only 4 miles from the Hospital and has excellent scheduled links to the other major airports in the British Isles, Europe, Middle East and North America.
The major specialities, based at the R.A.H. are Orthopaedic Surgery; Accident & Emergency; General Medicine; General Surgery and Urology; Paediatrics; ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Consultant led Maternity Services and Care of the Elderly. Psychiatric Assessment beds are situated within the Hospital, although under a different management. Major regional specialities available nearby in Glasgow are, Maxillofacial Surgery and Burns, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery.

THE ORTHOPAEDIC DEPARTMENT
There are currently 71 beds available in 3 Adult Wards and access to the Children’s Ward for emergency and elective admissions. 6 orthopaedic beds are allocated to the A & E Department as observation beds. All 3 adult wards are located on one floor and there is easy access to the main theatre area within which 3 dedicated plus 1 shared Orthopaedic Theatres accommodate trauma and elective procedures. There are currently 14 dedicated trauma sessions per week and 23 elective inpatient theatre sessions at the RoyalAlexandraHospital with a further 8 sessions at the Vale of Leven. In addition, there are 1 day surgery sessions in the dedicated day surgery unit at the RoyalAlexandraHospital, and 2 at the Vale of Leven.
Across the RoyalAlexandraHospital and the Vale of Leven RAH and VOLHospitals, There are 1749 elective in-patient admissions per year, 1448 elective day case admissions and 2810 emergency admissions (2012-13 figures).
The Orthopaedic and Fracture clinics are conducted in a suite of rooms adjacent to the Plaster and Treatment rooms with the X-ray Department in close proximity. Annual outpatient attendances currently total 19,000 per annum, including 6,795 new elective patients, and 4848 (21012-13 Figures) fracture clinic patients. These are seen not only in the Consultant led Orthopaedic and fracture clinics, but also in a variety of Extended Scope Practitioner and nurse Practitioner clinics. Multidisciplinary clinics are run jointly with the Departments of Physiotherapy and Medical Paediatrics for children with neuromuscular disorders.
The hospital is also one of the busiest trauma units within Scotland, and is supported by 2 full time Trauma Liaison nurses, who support the medical teams in the management of trauma referrals and emergency work undertaken within the department.
The RAH has access to CT/ MRI and Radiologists on site with an MSK interest. The site does not have Interventional Radiology / Nuclear Medicine facilities, but they are accessible within the Board.

The Orthopaedic specialty forms part of the Surgery & Anaesthetics Directorate. A full time Clinic Services Manager – Mr Rahul Shanker, has day-to-day managerial responsibility for Directorate issues.

TEACHING
A trauma meeting is held every morning at 8.30 a.m. attended by all junior medical staff and Consultants, where all the trauma admissions from the day before are discussed. In addition there is an educational meeting every Monday lunchtime alternating between journal club, case presentations and a joint meeting with the radiologists. There is a dedicated audit meeting once a month for 8 out of 12 months.
The unit is associated and directly involved with the teaching of University of Glasgow Medical School students, with rotating attachments of students within the department during term time
STUDY LEAVE & TRAINING
Study Leave will be in accordance with the terms and conditions of service and will be funded by the Board.
A good library is available on site and NHS e-library access is available for all staff.
Hospital lunchtime Postgraduate programme is arranged during term time.
GETTING TO THE HOSPITAL
Paisley is very close to GlasgowAirport so the easiest way to find us is to fly and take a taxi (about 5Km). There is also a bus direct from the airport to the hospital.
If driving, follow the M8 out of Glasgow and West towards the airport, pass the airport and take the A737 for Irvine. Signposts for the hospital start a couple of kms down this road.
By train, go Paisley Gilmour Street Station and go downstairs to the bus station underneath or take a taxi (only 2Km).
LEAVE REQUIREMENTS
Annual leave comprises 6 weeks plus 10 statutory public holidays.
Arrangements for leave and other absences must be approved by the Clinical Director

The successful candidate will be responsible for compliance with safe working procedures in line with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 together with any supplementary or amended guidelines.
RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS
The successful applicant will be required to possess a home telephone.
The successful applicant will be required to live within a 10-mile radius of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, or at an agreed location outwith this distance that will allow quick access to the Hospital in response to emergency calls. As clinical networks develop under proposals from the Review of Acute Services in Scotland there may be a requirement to undertake work at different locations.
