Many of these are obscure in the extreme, or obsolete, and most cannot be traced with any ease. The sources of some of the robes are given; these are: H47, H72 = Haycraft, editions of 1947 or 1972; HD = Hoodata.

National Council for Diplomas in Art & Design (now ceased(?))

Art Teacher’s Diploma (ATD):

a black hood of burgon shape [s2], lined with sarum red. (gown not known)

Diploma in Art & Design (DipAD):

a black gown of London BA pattern [b4]; a black hood of Toronto doctors’ shape, with a lining divided into quarters: maroon, crimson, white, scarlet. The neckband is coloured according to field of study: Textiles: maroon; 3D design: crimson; Graphic design: scarlet; Fine Art: white.

Diploma in Art (DAManc)

a black gown of London BA pattern [b4]; a white hood of simple shape [s1], lined scarlet, and with a 2” border of scarlet ribbon embroidered with the arms of the City of Manchester. H47

Diploma in Art (DAScot)

a black gown of Oxford BA pattern [b1]; a black hood of Edinburgh shape [s4], lined white and faced 2 ½” peacock blue. H47

MCCEd/MCollH: a spruce green hood of full shape [f1], faced 3” dark brown.

FCCEd/FCollH: a spruce green hood of full shape [f1], lined dark brown.

Imperial College, London (in its own right; the Associate diplomas derive from the institutions which were merged to make the College)

all diplomas wear a gown of Oxford BA pattern, but with the front sleeve seam left open [b8]

Diploma (DIC): a black hood of simple shape [s1], lined 6” white watered silk, with 1” purple velvet laid on it ½” from the edge. The neckband is black bound white.

Assoc. of the Royal College of Science (ARCSc): as DIC, but the neckband is white bound white.

Assoc. of the City & Guilds Institute (ACGI): as DIC, but the neckband is red bound white.

Assoc. of the Royal School of Mines (ARSM): as DIC, but the neckband is gold bound white.

Assoc. of St Mary’s School of Medicine (ASM): as DIC, but the neckband is blue bound white.

Assoc. of Imperial College (AIC): as DIC, but the hood and neckband are crimson.

Fellow of Imperial College (FIC): as DIC, but the hood and neck band are scarlet, and the hood is fully lined white. This diploma uses the London MA gown [m5]

Faculty of Teachers in Commerce

Fellow (FFTCom): a black hood of Manchester shape [s9], lined royal blue and faced ½” gold on all edges set ½” in. There is no proper gown for this diploma, as all holders must have other awards.

AFTCom and MFTCom have no robes.

The Educational Institute of Scotland

Fellow (FEIS): a black gown of Oxford BA pattern [b1], and a black hood of Glasgow shape, lined and bound with Glasgow MA silk, and faced 3” black. H47

Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University)

formerly used a hood for its diplomas: black, lined and bound copper silk. Shape either simple [s1] or Aberdeen [a1] H47

College of Teachers of the Blind

Fellows (FCTB): a white hood of full shape [f1], lined and bound scarlet. (gown unknown; H47)

British Institute for Academical Studies (1900-60)

Diploma: a black hood of London shape [f3], lined crimson and bound fur. (gown unknown; H47, and HD)

Royal Society of Teachers (now ceased)

a black gown of [b1] pattern, with grey ribbed silk facings. No hood.

Philosophical Society of England

Fellows (FPhS): a black gown of lay pattern [d4]; it was as the APhS.

The hood has changed over the years; it may be:

a)  Cambridge shape [f1], dark green lined light green;

b)  Oxford shape [s1], dark green lined green shot pale blue – this became obsolete in 1945;

c)  London shape [f3], dark green moiré lined pale blue – this is the current hood.

Associates (APhS) wear a black gown of London BA pattern, with green cords and buttons on the sleeves and yoke. The hood, which is unofficial, is black, simple [s1 or s2], bound on all edges with ½” green.

Institute of Biology

Fellow (FIBiol): a red hood of burgon shape [s2], lined chlorophyll green, faced 1” gold on the cowl.

Member (MIBiol): ): a red hood of burgon shape [s2], lined chlorophyll green.

Master of Chemical Analysis (MChemA): a grey hood of simple shape [s1], faced 3” gold watered silk. (gown?)

LCP: a black gown of London MA pattern [m5], with two vertical strips of black braid above each armhole, with a black button at either end; a black hood of full shape, bound on all edges with 1” violet, and with 1” violet set 1” away inside the cowl.

ACP: a black gown with bell sleeves [d2], with violet braid or ribbon, 1” wide, along the forearm seam; a black hood of burgon shape [s2], the cowl bound violet cord.

LCP: a black gown of Oxford BA pattern [b1], with violet braid 1” wide along the forearm seam; a black hood of Cambridge shape, faced 4” black watered, and bound on all edges 1” violet.

FCP: a black gown of [m10] pattern, with inverted-T armhole, and a strip of violet braid, 1” wide, from the shoulder to the top of the T; a black hood of Cambridge shape, lined black watered, and bound on all edges 2” purple.

FCollP and MCollP: a black gown of [d2] pattern, with the forearm seam left open, and a bar of violet braid, 1” wide, set horizontally on the facings 6” below the shoulder. There is no hood.

DipASE: the LCP gown and ACP hood.

All wear the following gown: black, of the Imperial College pattern [b8], with violet strings. HonFCP wears the 1982 FCP gown, with the addition of violet buttons at the top of the braid on the sleeves, and a violet cord and button on the yoke.

ACP and DipASE: a dark violet hood of Aberdeen shape, lined mid-violet.

LCP: a black hood of Aberdeen shape, faced 2½” violet.

FCP: a black hood of Aberdeen shape, lined violet.

Royal College of General Practitioners
