Mathematics Benchmark 3

Constructed Response Marking Scheme

Grade 4: Spinner

Mathematical Content

1 point:

A completed spinner that has shaded or labeled two sections for each of the four colors; blue, red, green and yellow.

Mathematical Process

2 points:

Student demonstrates understanding using mathematical vocabulary (equal chance, equally likely) that any person would have an equal chance of landing on any of the four colors.

Student references that the division of colors on the spinner determines equal chance or fairness in the game.

1 point:

Student explains a process for dividing the spinner into equal pieces, but doesn’t complete an explanation of chance.

Student provides a vague explanation of equal chance or fairness.

0 points:

The student provides a completely incorrect explanation or justification, one that cannot be interpreted, or there is no response.
