1. The members of the 505th National Guard Unit of Cleveland County will be leaving for Iraq in about 2 weeks. If your classroom would like to adopt one of these soldiers, you may email Janet Smith at the Kings Mountain Intermediate School and she will send you a name. The addresses will not be available for about 2 more weeks. In the meantime, you can plan what you would like to do. She also has a list of items these soldiers can use. Letters and notes from the students during the year will be a moral booster. This is a wonderful way to support our men overseas.

5. High Fives for Heroes (Read the story below.)

Zac’s Story

Haunted by intense night terrors and unprovoked anger explosions when his father, Michael deployed with his Army unit to Iraq, Zack would often try to console himself by repeating “Hi-5 is praying for daddy.”

Hi-5 is Zac’s favorite television program composed of five talented artists who offer education through music and upbeat skits. Zac attended a Hi-5 concert with his family days before his dad deployed. After the concert, Zac had a wonderful opportunity to meet the cast of the show, and upon learning of Michael’s upcoming deployment, they promised Zac they would pray for both him and his dad.

An incredible turnaround began when Zac asked his mother who else, beside Hi-5 was praying for his dad. He asked if people praying could make a “high five” had for him to hang on his wall so he could see how many prayers were out there for his dad. Danielle started by asking relatives to send a cut-out tracing of their hand to Zac with their prayers.

Word spread virally online and now, in less than 6 months, Zac has over 5,000 hands hanging on his wall from 47 states and 7 nations. Some hands just contain a name, some a prayer, some words of thanks and inspiration. All of the hands gave Zac the love, support, and faith he needed to cope with the separation from his father and have completely eliminated his sleep terrors and anger explosions.

After Zac’s father, Michael, shared Zac’s story with his troops in Iraq he told Danielle that it increased their morale because the soldiers’ didn’t realize all of the support they had back home. Upon hearing that, Danielle saw a way to let our heroes in Iraq and Afghanistan know just how much we appreciate their sacrifices … by sending them the same “high-five” hands of love and support that healed Zac’s aching heart.

Danielle joined with two-time “North Carolina Business Woman of the Year” award winner Jennifer Hart to for Operation High Fives for Heroes. Their mission is to cover mess halls at every military base, camp and ship in Iraq and Afghanistan with hands containing messages of gratitude and love of all those who support our troops. “We want every service member to know of the love and support they have from back home and to have a constant reminder of how grateful we are for their sacrifices” explained Danielle.

High Fives for Heroes

Mission Statement

High Fives for Heroes strives to cover mess halls at every military base, camp, and ship in Iraq and Afghanistan with hands containing messages of gratitude and love of all of those who support our troops. In doing so, we will be able to offer our troops a constant visual reminder of the overwhelming support they have back home.

How You Can Help

Be as creative or stay as simple as you want to be! Just trace your hand, cut it out, and on it, write your positive message to our troops! Be it a prayer, a note of thanks, or just your name and hometown, the message is all the same – We Support YOU!!!!

You can then drop your hand off at one of our drop off locations, mail it to out Post Office Box or scan it and send it through E-Mail. We then will send them to our troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan for them to post all over their mess halls and anywhere else a little encouragement is needed.
