ORDER OF THE ARROW

Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe Lodge

Dear Fellow Camper,

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate you on your election to our Order by the members of your unit. You are now entitled to take the further steps on the path leading to the circle of our Lodge as a candidate for the Order of the Arrow.

You will learn more of our Order later, but suffice it to say now that we are a brotherhood of honored campers, whose talents and skills are assembled together for the purpose of promoting camping and the Scouting ideals.

Each member of our Order, like you, has been honored by the members of their unit as being the ones who were best thought to exemplify the ideals of Scouting. For their outstanding achievement, they were elected to the place most respected by their unit – the circle of our lodge.

To have been elected into the Order, you must have learned much from your Scouting and camping experiences. It is appropriate then that we should induct you in a like fashion.

To enter our circle you must undergo an Ordeal. The Ordeal is the means by which we propose to educate you about our Order. To simply explain to you our ways and methods would serve you little --as you will understand after the Ordeal. Instead, you will gain awareness of us – if you are alert – by undergoing a number of challenges, which will be presented to you on the night of your Ordeal.

Upon completion of your Ordeal, you will be entitled to all the rights and privileges of an Arrowman as a member of the Order of the Arrow.

It is in preparation for your Ordeal that this packet has been prepared. Please read through this packet carefully so that you will be completely prepared for what we hope will be a truly rewarding and meaningful experience.

Yours in Service,

Mark Ishizu

Lodge Chief 2008-2009

ORDER OF THE ARROW

Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe Lodge

September 2008

To the Parents of Candidates:

Congratulations! Your son is a candidate for the honorary camping society of the Boy Scouts of America, the Order of the Arrow. The OA, as it is called, is a national brotherhood of Scout honor campers that originated in 1915. The purposes of the OA are to recognize those campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit, to promote Scout camping, and to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Candidates for the Order of the Arrow are chosen not only for what they have done, but also for what they are expected to do in serving the welfare of others. Because your son was selected for candidacy by the unique method of being elected by his peers, we are sure that he is well worthy of this honor.

On Saturday, October 25th at CampPupukea, your son will become a member of our OA Lodge, Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe, during our induction weekend. This weekend will offer a unique opportunity for him to reflect on his personal commitment to the principles and purposes of the Order of the Arrow. The weekend is undertaken by every new candidate and is a meaningful and inspiring experience that will not soon be forgotten.

Induction in the Order of the Arrow will open many new doors for your son. Our lodge participates in many events every year, including a Conclave with other lodges (held lastmonth at CampHonokaia on the BigIsland), a Lodge Leadership Development workshop, and most recently the National Leadership Seminar at Kaneohe Marine Base Hawaii. The OA provides some of the most valuable youth leadership training opportunities available in Scouting. These opportunities will build upon the knowledge he already has received during his Scouting experience. This is truly an exciting time for you and your son. Your encouragement will be appreciated.

Please feel free to contact me at 235-7617 if you have any questions concerning the Order of the Arrow. Thank you for your support of your son and of Scouting.

Sincerely,

Pete Thornton

Lodge Advisor

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORDEAL CANDIDATES

The “Ordeal” is the induction phase through which all members of the Order of the Arrow must pass. You shall take this trail only once. It will require from you a sharp mind and strong body to meet the challenges of the Ordeal. Fear it not; for the experience is not one designed to make you miserable or uncomfortable. The challenge we speak of is in bending yourself to think in another way – a way which we perceive to be higher; a way which we feel you are capable of seeing, for it is that we have great confidence in the judgment of your fellow troop members.

There are some important ideas in the Ordeal, which we feel you should listen for as you undergo your Ordeal:

  • On the first night of the Ordeal, when you are brought before the Chief of the Fire, listen to his words carefully. There, he will describe to you what shall be asked of you. Through his words, you will find a clue to the meaning of the Order.
  • During the Ordeal, think of what you are doing and what purpose it serves - step back in perspective to look at the overall scene. What will you see? Read carefully all of the booklets which will be given to you. Do not lose them – you will want to keep them for later.
  • As the day goes on, you should be forming an idea of what the Order of the Arrow is about. If you have been attentive and alert, your thoughts may be confirmed that evening as you are once again brought before the Chief of the Fire. Here he shall reveal to you all that you should know, and will ask you to make a commitment. LISTEN TO HIS ADMONITIONS WELL! If you abide by his words and are sincere in your pledges, you will find that when you look back, your Ordeal will have been a rewarding experience.

Code of Conduct and Statement of Understanding

for Council-sponsored Activities

Statement of Understanding. All youth and adult participants are registered for activities and events based on their qualifications in character, Scout skills, physical fitness, and leadership. Therefore, all participants are asked to sign this Code of Conduct and Statement of Understanding as a condition for participation with the further understanding that serious misconduct or infraction of rules and regulations may result in expulsion, at the participants expense, from the activity or event. Ultimately we want each participant to be responsible for their own behavior and only when necessary will the procedure be invoked

to dismiss a participant home from the activity.

All youth and adult participants are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct as follows:

  1. Adult leaders (Advisors and Assistants) are responsible for the supervision of their membership in respect to maintaining discipline, security, and the Aloha Council code of conduct.
  2. The Scout Oath and Law will be my guide throughout the activity.
  3. I will set a good example by keeping myself neatly dressed and presentable. (The official Scout uniform or activity uniform when specified by the Aloha Council, unit leaders or activity leadership.)
  4. I will attend all scheduled programs and participate as required in cooperation with other participants and leadership.
  5. In consideration of other participants, I agree to follow bedtime and sleep schedule of the activity, unless otherwise directed by the Council or activity leadership.
  6. I will be responsible for keeping my tent or quarters and personal gear labeled, clean, and neat. I will adhere to all Aloha Council and facility recycle policies and regulations, including the Outdoor Code. I will do my share to prevent littering of Aloha Council and other facilities.
  7. It is clearly understood that the purchase, possession, or consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs by any Scout is prohibited. This standard shall apply to all participants, both youth and adult.
  8. Serious and/or repetitive behavior violations by youth including use of tobacco, cheating, stealing, dishonesty, swearing, fighting, and cursing may result in expulsion from the activity or serious disciplinary actions and loss of privileges.
  9. I agree that gambling of any form is prohibited.
  10. Possession or detonation of fireworks is prohibited.
  11. I will demonstrate respect for unit and Council property and be personally responsible for cleanliness and any loss, breakage, or vandalism of property.
  12. Neither the activity leadership, nor the Aloha Council, BSA, will be responsible for loss, breakage or theft of personal items. I will label all my personal items and check items of value at the direction of troop leaders. Theft will be grounds for expulsion.
  13. While participating in Council activities, all Scouts and leaders will obey the safety rules and instructions of all supervisors and staff members.
  14. Adult leaders and youth are prohibited from having firearms and weapons in their possession in accordance with BSA regulations and local and state laws.
  15. Adult leaders will be guided by the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and will obey all local and state laws.
  16. Adult leaders must receive Youth Protection Training and follow the guidelines therein.
  17. Hazing has no place in Scouting. Nor does running the gauntlet, belt lines, or similar physical punishment. Leaders and older Scouts must prevent all Scouts from being “initiated” into the group with any hazing activity.
  18. Adult leaders should have the good judgment to avoid trading souvenirs or patches with a child or youth member in Scouting. Youth members may trade with youth members. Adult leaders must trade only with our adults 18 years of age or older.
  19. Adult leaders and youth leaders must instruct youth and leaders to avoid confrontation with groups, demonstrations, or hecklers and assume a passive reaction to name calling from individuals or groups. Remove the Scout group from the area of potential conflict immediately.
  20. Serious violations of this code may result in expulsion at the participant’s own expense from the Activity. All decisions of the Activity leadership will be final.

I certify that I have read the Statement of Understanding and agree to abide by the conditions in the Code of Conduct as a participant in the Aloha Council activity.
