About the Curriculum Committee

Membership of the Committee

  1. President-Elect of the Academic Senate (Co-chair, non-voting)
  2. Elected Non-Voting Co-chair (from Faculty Curriculum Representatives). In the event that a division’s representative is elected to the co-chair position, the division will elect a representative to replace him or her.
  3. Vice President of Instruction (non-voting advisor to the committee and liaison to both the MJC IAC and the CCC Chancellor’s Office)
  4. Faculty representative by division based on the following criteria:
  5. If a division has greater than or equal to 25 full-time faculty members and greater than or equal to 100 courses, then the division shall have two representatives, elected by and with duties delineated by the division.
  6. If a division does not meet both conditions above, then the division shall have one representative, elected by the division.
  7. One Community Services representative (elected by Community Services)
  8. One counselor(elected by the counselors)
  9. One student appointed by the Associated Students
  10. Articulation Officer
  11. Matriculation representative

Note:

As curriculum is an area in which the Board primarily relies upon faculty, representation by faculty is preferable to administrative representation whenever possible.

Functions of the Committee

  1. To review all recommendations for credit and non-credit courses, including modifications, deletions, and additions.
  2. To periodically review and make recommendations on all courses and programs.
  3. To periodically review all courses and program prerequisites.
  4. To review all courses offered as Technology Mediated Instruction.
  5. To periodically review and recommend changes to the graduation requirements.
  6. To make recommendations on courses to be placed on the graduation requirements, CSU-GE transfer, and IGETC transfer lists.
  7. To resolve inter- and intra-divisional curriculum problems.
  8. To coordinate the MJC curriculum offerings with those of other campuses within the District and with appropriate state agencies.
  9. To establish procedures and recommend policies affecting curriculum.
  10. To suggest curriculum considerations and refer them to the appropriate divisions.
  11. To make recommendations on curriculum to the Board of Trustees.

Curriculum Representative Terms:

  1. The faculty co-chair shall serve a two-year term, staggered with that of the President-Elect of the Senate. The election of the faculty co-chair shall take place at the last Curriculum Committee meeting of the Spring semester. Both co-chairs shall be compensated for their service on the committee with reassigned time.
  2. Certified members and the student representative shall be selected by their constituencies in democratic fashion. The representatives’ names and a description of the method of selection shall be forwarded to the Curriculum Information Coordinator at least one week prior to the first Curriculum Committee meeting of each academic year.

Curriculum Support:

The Instruction Office will provide administrative and secretarial support for the work of the Curriculum Committee.
