A special note from the New Albany Arts Council

The New Albany Arts Council produces the Broadway Jr. musicals each summer with minimal cost to the performers by seeking corporate funding and grants and through performance ticket sales to underwrite the approximate $25,000 cost to put on these shows. It is important to us that every child who wishes to experience musical theatre has that opportunity. It takes a lot of “behind the scenes” hands to put on a first class production and we need the help of our actors’ parents to make sure there are enough hands to insure we have a quality production your children deserve. Please assess where you can help out and return this form with your child to auditions.

Parent/Guardian: I realize that if my child is chosen for a part, I will be responsible for making sure he/she attends rehearsals or will notify the director in case of illness. I understand that missing too many rehearsals or misbehavior may be grounds for my child’s removal from the production. As legal guardian of this child, I give permission for him/her to attend rehearsals & performances and participate in all activities unless otherwise stated. I agree to cooperate with all regulations and procedures. I understand there is a non-refundable fee should my child be cast in the show. I understand that, when participating in NAAC events, my child may be photographed for print, video, or electronic imaging and those images may be used on the NAAC website and in future promotional materials.

·  Please arrive no later than 1:30 pm.

·  Songs are to be sung a capella-without background music or accompaniment

·  Auditions will consist of two sections: singing and dancing. Groups of six will enter the audition room together and perform their song. Once all six have finished the singing portion, they will learn a short dance. There will be no line reading during auditions this year.

Attendance Information and policies.

We will operate on a four day week, beginning June 10th. We rehearse Tuesday-Friday 9:00 am until 2:00 pm at Broadway Bound Dance Centre. Your child will not be needed at every rehearsal during the first two weeks. We will not rehearse on Friday, July 4th. Should the school district need to make up calamity days, we will add Mondays to the rehearsal schedule.

Each member of the show is essential to our success, and rehearsal attendance is important. Cast members are allowed up to 4 excused absences. It is the responsibility of the cast member to get together with our dance captains to learn any dances or scenes they missed while gone. Mr. Josh and Mrs. Mary will help when they can, but we do not have time to re-teach parts of the show to everyone and maintain the rehearsal schedule. Dance captains will be named on the cast list.

There will be a MANDATORY all day rehearsal on Saturday, July 5th from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at the McCoy Center. If your child is unable to attend this day, please do not have them audition for the show. Please do not ask for permission to miss this day; it will not be granted.

Dress rehearsals will take place July 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th in the evenings from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at the McCoy Center. Attendance is mandatory at all dress rehearsals. Anyone who needs to miss one of these rehearsals is asked to not audition for this production.

There will be rehearsals on the weekends during the months of April and May. These dates will be announced shortly after auditions.

If you have any questions regarding rehearsals or anything else in the packet, please email Mr. Josh at .

Cast of Characters

The Blue Fairy- The Blue Fairy is convinced of her own perfection and does not like having it called into question. The performer you cast should have good comedic instincts and a solid singing voice. This role does not require excessive dancing.

Gepetto- Geppetto is a lonely toymaker who longs to be a father. Look for a mature performer who feels comfortable playing a parent to Pinocchio and isn’t afraid of showing emotion. Cast a strong singer, as Geppetto has several solos.

Pinocchio- Pinocchio is a wooden puppet who doesn’t know where he belongs. Look for a performer who can handle the lively personality of a little boy while also capturing tender moments. Although Pinocchio is a boy, the role can be played by a boy or girl. Pinocchio has a few solos, but a strong character actor can easily act through them.

Rosa, Viola & Arancia- Rosa, Viola & Arancia, fairies in training, are sweet and kind. The performers in these roles should be expressive observers since they often oversee the action occurring onstage during flashbacks. They sing as a group, often alongside the Blue Fairy. Their individual distinctions from one another can be discovered during rehearsal.

Sue- Sue is a fairy in training who marches to the beat of her own drum. She isn’t your typical fairy, as sweetness isn’t in her nature. The performer in this role can be brooding or brash, but certainly a contrast to Rosa, Viola and Arancia, although vocally she should blend in.

Stromboli- Stromboli is a bumbling, loud, incompetent puppeteer who has at least a few screws loose. Cast a versatile performer who can create silly voices to take this character and his marionettes over-the-top. Stromboli’s songs are challenging, so look for someone who is comfortable with his solos and doesn’t shy away from silliness.

Professore Buongrazzo- Professore Buongrazzo is a passionate, mad scientist obsessed with building perfect children. While some solos are required, character work is most important for this role.

Junior- Junior is Professore Buonragazzo’s mirror image assistant, created using the child-making machine. The performer in this role will need to work closely with the performer playing the Professor to mimic his movements. A short solo is required, but it can be spoken if necessary.

Bernardo & Maria- Bernardo & Maria are married residents of Idyllia who are looking to purchase a “perfect” daughter from Professore Buonragazzo. These roles require group singing only. These performers can become part of the ensemble in other group numbers.

Signora Giovanni- Signora Giovanni is Pinocchio’s teacher. The role can be a great opportunity to feature a performer who doesn’t sing. If needed, this performer can become part of the ensemble in other group numbers.

Ringleader- The Ringleader runs Pleasure Island. The performer playing this role should have a real sense of showmanship. This role requires some singing and is a great opportunity to showcase a dancer. The Ringleader can be played by a boy or a girl, but be sure to cast a performer who can commit to the character’s mischievous ways.

Town parents- Town Parents (Signora Lisi, Signore Fucito, Signora Mancini, Signor Alcamo, Signora Sommelia, Signora Contrastana, Signora Rosati, Signore Proto, Signore Marino) are the beleaguered mothers and judgmental fathers of the town children. The performers cast in these roles should be able to create individual personalities for their characters. There are opportunities for solos, but performers can sing in groups.

Town children- The Town Children (Dante, Agata, Fiorello, Francesca, Adriana, Luigi, Gina, Lia, Rico) love the toys in Geppetto’s shop. The performers cast in these roles should be able to create individual personalities for their characters.

Children of Idyllia- Children of Idyllia (Amelia, Salvatore, Carla, Lucia, Giuseppe, Boy 1, Boy 2) are the perfect children created by Professore Buonragazzo. Performers cast in these roles should be able to sing in groups, with featured speaking lines. There are great opportunities for movement and dance.

February 1st, 2014

Dear Parents,

Our Junior Musical program was started in 2000 to give elementary and middle school aged children the opportunity to hone their theatrical talents before entering high school. Since then, we have performed 14 shows and worked with hundreds of children and their families. Past participants in our productions have gone on to study theatre in London and New York, and continue to perform onstage all over the country.

As we gain experience from each production, the auditioning committee, which consists of myself, choreographer Mary White, Assistant Director Cody Westbrook and Production Assistant Anna Rosselet, has decided to alter the auditioning process in hopes of making them more effective for the casting process. Therefore, this year, we will continue to audition in groups of 6, but with a few differences. All 6 children in each group will enter the audition room at the same time, where they will sing one at a time before dancing as a group. There will be no line reading during auditions; that will be held until callbacks.

The NAAC is made up of a board of volunteers who give their time for the love of the arts and New Albany. Because of this, we ask that parents take part in the production in some capacity. Earlier in the packet is a volunteer form that offers many options based on your interest and time constraints. Everyone auditioning must have a parent select an option and sign the bottom portion. If no choice is selected and there is no signature on the form, the child will not be allowed to audition. Once rehearsals begin in June, parents will be contacted by the head of their committee for further instructions and details. This year, we have a great need for parents who can help with costumes and set pieces.

Fees for participation in the Junior Musical are $250 per child. Fees are collected shortly after auditions, at which time scripts and rehearsal cds are also handed out. Fees cover venue rental, rehearsal space, license fee, director and choreographer salaries, costume and set supplies, as well as administrative costs. Fees are non-refundable, as we begin constructing costumes and ordering supplies shortly after auditions.

We do not wish to exclude anyone from participation in the production due to financial hardship. Therefore, limited scholarship funds are available based on financial need. Please contact either myself at the email address below, or Kathy Mayhorn, NAAC President at . All scholarship requests are kept confidential. We also offer a payment plan for any families who wish to take spread the fee payment out over several months.

Everyone at the NAAC is looking forward to another great production-we hope you are, too! If you have any questions regarding anything mentioned above, please email me at .

Sincerely,

Josh McKinney

My Son Pinocchio Jr. Director
