IAP Academic Notes

The Academic Program

This four-week program (mid-July to mid-August) offers students a rigorous academic curriculum focusing on the emergence of a united Europe and to gain an understanding of the “real world” of EU institutions. Summer 2011 offerings are:

Current EU Policy Debates

3 credits for Political Science 690: Study Abroad Topics in Political Studies: Comparative Politics

Dr. Arista Cirtautas

University of Washington

Visiting Lecturer, Jackson School of International Studies

EU Institutions: View from inside the Brussels Complex

3 credits for Political Science 401: Topics in Political Science

Dr. Peter Hobbing, former Principal Administrator

European Commission

EU Simulation

Your academic work for the simulation will be merged with the EU institutions coursework for one grade for Poli Sci 401 for 3 credits

Registration

IAP will register you for a special “Study Abroad Course” for the term(s) you will be studying abroad; therefore, it is not necessary for you to register on the UW-Madison campus. This is a temporary registration, which will be converted into graded UW-Madison credit after the completion of your program.

Equivalents and Course Equivalent Request Form (CERF)

Each course you take abroad must be assigned a UW-Madison “equivalent” and the grade you receive in the course also transfers back to be recorded on your UW-Madison transcript. In order to establish UW-Madison course equivalents for your study abroad courses, you will submit a Course Equivalent Request Form (CERF) through your My Study Abroad account. The deadline to submit the CERF is by the end of the fourth week of classes (not including pre-session terms). Detailed information on the UW course equivalent process that you will use through your My Study Abroad account is available in the IAP Study Abroad Handbook and in your My Study Abroad account under the academics tab.

Limits and Load

Students are expected to enroll in a full-time academic program. All three course components are required: Current EU Policy Debates, EU Institutions: View from Inside the Brussels Complex and the EU Simulation.

Pass/Fail/Drop/Audit

Due to the length of this program, students are not able to take these courses for Pass/Fail credit. Please refer to the IAP Study Abroad Handbook for academic policies and grade conversion scales.

Credits

Student will earn a total of six credits for the coursework completed on the program. Please see page one for more information on the credit breakdown.
