Competitive 4-on-4 Volleyball Rules
Revised October 2017
Communication: League Coordinator will communicate to each team’s captain exclusively through email. Team captains are responsible to ensure that their team knows the rules and the schedule. Please contact Travis if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns .
Members: Summit members must check in at the front desk when entering the facility.
Non-Members: All non-members must check in on the sign-in sheet at the front desk when entering the facility. You may request the use of a temporary locker card for the evening. Players who are not members of The Summit are not allowed to use other parts of The Summit facility before, during or after the scheduled games. The league fee allows non-member players to use the locker rooms before and after the games and to use the gymnasium only during the scheduled games. Non-members can only check-in 20 minutes before their game.
Check-In: Each player must check-in with The Summit league coordinator each week before play can start. Each team roster will be checked before each game to ensure that all players on the court are on that team roster and are registered league players. All league participants must sign a liability waiver before they may play. Players are responsible for checking-in before each game to be eligible for tournament play.
Spectators: All spectators must check-in at the front desk according to the procedure listed above. Spectators must not interfere with play and are expected to follow the behavior guidelines listed below. Children below the age of 7 are not allowed in the gymnasium during play and must watch from the gallery in the lobby. Children between the ages of 7-13 must be able to remain seated on the bench and should not interfere with play.
Gym Shoes: All players must have clean gym shoes to play in the gymnasium.
Games Start On Time: If either team does not show up within 5 minutes of the start time of the game, it will be a forfeit for that team. The official clock for all games is the large scoreboard clock on the gymnasium wall. Please be aware of your schedule.
Co-Ed: No more than 2 male players are allowed to play at one time. Teams may play short, but cannot exceed this maximum. No minimum of male or female players.
SeasonDuration: All teams are guaranteed 8 regular season games plus one tournament game.
Tournament: A seeded single elimination tournament will take place at the end of the regular season. All teams are guaranteed one game. Ranks are determined by season standings (wins and losses). In the case of teams with the same record, whoever won the game between them during the regular season will determine the tiebreaker. Players who are not on the team roster or who have not played in at least two regular season games are not eligible to participate in the tournament.
Behavior: Any behavior deemed inappropriate in any way by the league coordinator or any Summit staff will result in immediate ejection from the game and possible ejection from the league without refund. Players will be ejected for fighting, swearing, arguing, or any type of inappropriate behavior. There will be no warnings and no refunds will be issued. The league coordinator may make decisions regarding ejection from the league.
Game Format: Indoor co-ed 4-on-4 volleyball.

Referees: This is a call your own league. If there is a question on a call replay the point.
Disputes, Protests & Appeals: Any dispute between teams or players should be resolved before the next play. If the players or team captains cannot resolve the dispute the play will be redone.
Team Rosters and Forfeiting Games: If a team is short players, they have several options. First, a team can play with as little as 2 people and still be recorded as an official game as long as those people are on the team roster. Second, they may ask to substitute with (a) registered player(s) from another team in the same league. This must be approved before the start of the game by the opposing team. If approved before the game, it will be recorded as an official game. If it is not approved, a “pick-up” game can be played in its place with the extra players, and it will be recorded as a forfeit. Third, players may also be added to team rosters after the season starts (not during the tournament). Added player must pay the nonmember fee (if applicable) and sign the waiver BEFORE playing.
Scoring: Games will utilize rally scoring; whereby the team that wins the rally will be awarded a point. Serves that touch the net and pass over into the opponent’s court are legal. A match is won by the team that wins the best of three games. A game is won by the team which first scores 21 points with a minimum lead of two points, or the first team to 23 points. A deciding game (third game) is won by the team which first scores 15 points with a minimum lead of two points, or the first team to 17 points.
Tie Games: Games that end in a tie at the end of the 45-minute clock will go to sudden death scoring. The team that breaks the tie will be recorded as the winner of the match.
Substitutes: Each team may substitute players from their team during the game. The substitution can only be made just before the serve, therefore, only the team that is serving can make a substitution.
Injuries: If a player is injured, play will stop immediately. Summit staff in accordance with normal operating procedures will treat all injuries for all guests.
Legal Ball Contact: The ball must be hit, not caught or thrown. The ball may touch any part of the body. During the first hit of the team, the ball may contact various parts of the body consecutively, provided that the contacts occur during one action. The contact must be closed fingers, no open finger contact and may not use feet. A fault results from contacting the ball twice in succession by the same player during 2nd & 3rd hits.
Hits: No open handed dinks allowed. Hand must be closed unless setting or striking the ball. The contact must be closed fingers, no open finger contact. No open hand tipping allowed.
Players’ positions and rotation: Players may start and play anywhere on their side of the court. There is no attack line. Service order must be obeyed. Players can penetrate under the net provided they don’t interfere with the opponent.
Ball out of play: The curtain, back wall, and ceiling are out. If the ball hits any of these areas it is the other team’s ball. If the ball hits the backboard and was heading out of bounds, it is considered out. If you feel that your team could have played the ball if the basket was not in the way, you may redo the play. Please be honest.
Serving:Server must serve the ball from behind the second white line (ask for clarification if needed).
Server must call score loudly before the serve. This will help all the players know the ball is in play and keep accurate track of the scores. If the server neglects to call the score, opposing team may request a re-serve.
Please pick up any messes on the benches before you leave.
BE FAIR AND HAVE FUN!!!!!
