Directions: First, observe overall patterns or trends in your assigned region then record specific data on page 2.:

1. Open Click on “Explore the Map.” Deselect the Population Dots so that

you can see the colors of the overlay more clearly (select Map Features, click Population Dots so it is no

longer highlighted blue).

2. Enable the Fertility Overlay on your map (select Overlays, click Fertility Rates).

3. Press play to watch how the overlay in your region changes from 1950 onwards. Record general

observations below.

4. Enable the Life Expectancy Overlay on your map (select Overlays, click Life Expectancy). Record general observations below.

Region: ______

General observations for Fertility Rate Overlay - What do you observe about your region and any identifiable
trends as you go from 1950 to the present? Do you notice any patterns? What countries seem to not follow the pattern [or have significantly different statistics than the others]?
Compare the assigned region with another nearby region. The regions observed are[name two regions]:
General observations for Fertility Rate Overlay - What do you observe about trends in your region compared to the other region? How might you explain the similarities/differences?
General observations for Life Expectancy Overlay - What do you observe about your region and any identifiable trends as you go from 1950 to the present? Do you notice any patterns? What countries seem to not follow the pattern [or have significantly different statistics than the others]?

Answer the Questions:

Are there any changes between this year and the previous year? If so, why do you think these occur?

Is there any variability between the fertility rates in the countries of your region? Why might that be true?

Is there any variability between life expectancy within the countries of your region? Why might that be true?

Now look at future projections. For 2025 and 2050, answer the following questions:

Assigned Region:
Dates / Fertility Rates / Life Expectancy
2025
2050

Answer the Questions:

Based on the projections, will fertility rates and life expectancy increase or decrease? Why do you think this will occur?

What benefits or issues might these projections suggest for the future?

Big Questions:

  1. How do fertility and literacy rates provide one way of analyzing the standard of living and level of economic development and opportunity available in a region?
  2. How would you classify this region in terms of standard of living and economic development based on this data?
  3. How would you classify specific countries within the region in terms of standard of living and economic development based on this data?
