Community Resource Project and Booklist

For this assignment, you will identify and create a list of three community resources that you could use to teach about freedom. A booklist with at least 5 books for each community resource should be included with each of the community resources identified.

Use the following table to organize your information. Please list the community resource including the address, provide a brief overview describing the resource, and include 5 books that you might read with your class before or after your visit.

Community Resource Identified
(3 total) / Community Resource Overview
(provide an overview of the resource and the benefits) / Booklist including title, author, illustrator and “why statement” – 5 books for each resource
1.
2.
3.

As part of the Teaching for Freedom workshop, one of your community resources should be a visit to the houses or exhibits identified in the presentation. For example, you may choose to visit locations such as the Rankin House, the John Parker House, the Harriet Beecher Stowe house, or the Freedom Center. After your visit, in addition to completing the table, please prepare a one-page overview of how you could use this resource to teach your students about slavery and the Underground Railroad. Please include pictures to help further explain your ideas. You may also post your ideas and pictures on the Teaching for Freedom blog.
