JOB TITLE TAKE PART COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS OFFICER

RESPONSIBLE TOTAKE PART PROGRAMME MANAGER

BACKGROUND TO THE ROLE: Salisbury Playhouse has a busy Take Part department which offers participatory experiences for children, young people and adults both in and outside the building which connects with the core work of the organisation. It is extremely important we are able to connect with the community both locally and regionally in order to plan, develop and deliver projects appropriate to the needs of the community.

This is a new post which has grown out of the restructured Take Part Department in 2015 to complement the existing posts of Take Part Programme Manager, Creative Learning Director, Youth Theatre Director and BTEC Course Leader. This role is initially fixed term for 1 year.

Salisbury Playhouse is currently undergoing a period of change involving closer working with the other Arts Organisations in the city, at this time it is hugely important that our relationship with the community is strong so were are able to celebrate with them the strength and coherence of the arts offer we will be able to provide.

PURPOSE OF ROLE: To ensure Salisbury Playhouse is well positioned to respond to the needs of the local and regional community by engaging and developing relationships with key groups, organisations and community leaders. The successful candidate doesn’t need to be a Theatre practitioner but it is imagined they will have some delivery skills that may be used as appropriate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Engagement

  • In consultation with the Take Part Programme Manager support the development of the community programmerelating to the core artistic programme
  • Build and develop meaningful relationships with groups that qualify under pre-agreed criteria.
  • Work in collaboration with those communities to ensure the effective development of projects
  • Connect with statutory and non-statutory organisations in order to identify relevant areas of priority for the delivery of community projects
  • Attend meetings with partners to identify and develop funding and project opportunities
  • Engage with identified priority groups of children and young people outside educational settings e.g. children in care, children with disabilities or children at risk, ensuring their inclusion in Salisbury Playhouse activities for children and young people
  • Engage with groups of adults facing disadvantage through circumstances such as disability, social exclusion or mental health issues
  • Support thedevelopment and promotion of Salisbury Playhouse projects relating to health and well being
  • Attend community events on behalf of Salisbury Playhouse delivering relevant activities as appropriate
  • Be an ambassador for Salisbury Playhouse and articulate to the community the key messages of the organisation

Strategy, Planning, Monitoring & Delivery

  • Contribute to the development of a range of activities and participation projects for identified communities both in house and in other settings.
  • Alongside the rest of the Take Part team contribute to the monitoring and review of the theatre’s Take Part strategy within the context of the artistic policy
  • With the Take Part Team monitor and developa community engagement programme that reflects a commitment to diversity and offers a broad and equal range of opportunity
  • Enable identified groups to have access to Arts Award qualifications where appropriate
  • Maintain a keen awareness of developments in community projects and arts and health within theatre contexts and endeavour to ensure that Salisbury Playhouse is leading in such areas.
  • To report and feedback to immediate colleagues and the wider organisation on developments with partners and maintain a high profile internally and externally for this area of work
  • Ensure that diversity and access are positively considered in all aspects of the role

Team Working

  • Work with the Take Part Programme Manager, Creative Learning Director and the Youth Theatre Director to ensure a cohesive ethos for the department’s work
  • Contribute to ensuring best practice in working with vulnerable children, young people and adults is delivered throughout the Take Part team and across the theatre
  • Monitor, assess and record work according to relevant criteria provided by funders and Salisbury Playhouse
  • Create and update a database of contacts and information to be made available to the Take Part Team

Other

  • Attend training, conferences andindustry events as required by the Take Part Team
  • Maintain an up to date awareness of community engagement, health and well being advances, and personal and professional development
  • Support and promote all company policy, with specific attention to Equality & Diversity, Customer Care, Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Data Protection.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • A qualification at degree level or equivalent professional experience in community arts / arts and health/ disability lead arts within a theatre context
  • A good working knowledge of community theatre practice, arts and health practice and disability led arts practice both in the UK and internationally
  • An understanding and passion for forward thinking, socially engaged arts practice
  • Experience of working on outreach projects within an arts context
  • Knowledge of Arts Award
  • Highly articulate with persuasive communication skills
  • Effective and efficient IT skills
  • Excellent organisation and presentation skills
  • Self-motivation with ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Thorough knowledge of safeguarding issues, particularly in relation to vulnerable young people
  • To have a confident personality

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Salary: £20,000 per annum (pro rata)

Hours: 16 hours per week. It is expected that one day per week is spent in the office (preferably Friday) to update the Take Part team, engage with existing Salisbury Playhouse community activity and carry out relevant administrative tasks. The remaining hours are expected to be spent in the community attending events, meetings, networking events and conferences as well as visiting Playhouse community projects. These hours will be monitored through timesheets on a 6 weekly basis and it is understood that not all hours will be carried out each week but may peak at certain times depending on activity.
