Victims Assistance & Community Outreach Position Description

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervisionof the Executive Director/Program Director, provides an array of services to families who are victims of crime. Works with local businesses and agencies on child abuse education. Provides community outreach services and resource referrals for clients, as well as providing educational/outreach programs in the Hispanic community, for all youth agencies, churches and other organizations as requested.

LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE: Requires the ability to work with a team of professionals from collaborating agencies; conceptual understanding of the role to the Center; operates within Center policies and procedures; strict adherence to confidentiality policy.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Establishing a network of community resources for child victim’s families, providing educational programs on child abuse, teaching and providing life skills and parenting in coordination with the Center’s Professional Counseling staff. Assisting families with paperwork and providing standard advocacy services. Providing follow-up support for all families that come through the AdvocacyCenter as well as assisting all families with Crime Victim’s Compensation Paperwork as needed.

  • Assessing each individual family’s needs and willingness to work with the Center and cooperating agencies.
  • Providing follow up for phone calls with families to offer support and provide updates on case status and resources available.
  • Researching and delivering up to date child abuse prevention and outreach programs to new audiences, particularly in minority areas.
  • Translating for victim’s families and for team of professionals that Center collaborates with in child abuse investigations.
  • Promoting positive changes for families: Assist in seeking employment, job applications, interviewing, proper nutrition, budgeting, increasing self-esteem, addressing parenting issues, and building confidence through joint programming with counseling staff and other professionals.
  • Reporting all information pertinent to a child’s safety to Executive Director/Program Director and appropriate investigating agencies.
  • Maintain open and on-going communication with Executive Director/Program Director.
  • Network with all agencies providing resources and social services in Johnson County.
  • Work in cooperation with Direct Service Coordinator in manning phones and assisting families with paperwork.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience in social services, excellent communication skills, excellent networking skills, ability to learn Center’s database programs.

DESIRABLE PERSONAL QUALITIES: Tact, good judgement, flexibility, and a positive attitude. High professional standards and ethics. Ability to work well with a variety of people from various disciplines. Ability to refer children and families to appropriate community resources, and the ability to collect and report information on services provided.
