A two-week intensive career development symposium for Command-level Law Enforcement personnel designed to enhance leadership and management skills.

The Command Staff Institute is a collaborative environment in which participants will:

  • Learn and use the most current ideas in leadership theory
  • Explore and develop management tools
  • Examine the ethics of command
  • Study the best practices in American policing
  • Complete an in-class group project that analyzes a hypothetical agency and makes comprehensive recommendations to solve the identified problems.

Candidates for the Institute must hold or be promotable to the rank of Lieutenant or higher, be recognized within their agency as an effective supervisor, and be nominated by their Chief or Sheriff. Applicants will be reviewed by an acceptance committee and those applicants that meet the requirements of the course will be selected for the CSI

DEADLINES: Applications and required documents must be submitted byFebruary 1, 2017.

CLASS SIZE: Restricted to 24 participants. Candidates not selected may reapply for the next session.

To be eligible to attend the Command Staff Institute, a candidate must…

  • Be a certified and/or sworn peace officer currently employed by a law enforcement agency
  • Be a manager/supervisor of supervisors or on a promotional list to become one
  • Have attended at least 32 hours of first-line supervisory training
  • Submit this application, a resume and a letter of recommendation signed by the CEO of your agency
  • Prepare and attach a written essay of no more than five hundred words explaining why you want to attend the CSI, and how you will use the knowledge and skills gained from the course in your career.
