3.   HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Causes severe burns

Irritating to eyes and skin

4.   FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation: Remove from exposure, rest and keep warm. In severe cases, or if recovery is not rapid or complete, seek medical attention.

Ingestion: Wash out mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. If patient is conscious, give water to drink. Seek immediate medical attention.

Skin Contact: Drench the skin with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. If large areas of the skin are damaged, or if irritation persists seek medical attention.

Eye Contact: Irrigate thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.

5.   FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

Suitable Extinguishing Media: Use extinguisher suitable to cause of fire.

Special Fire-Fighting Procedures: Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Heating ay produce: oxides of carbon, oxides of nitrogen. May react with some metals generating hydrogen gas.

6.   ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions: Wear appropriate protective clothing. Ventilate the area to dispel residual vapours.

Spill Cleanup Procedures: Absorb large spillages onto sand or any absorbent material and dispose of in accordance with Local Authority Regulations. Small spillages may be rinsed away with large quantities of water. Do not allow product to enter eyes. Try to prevent the material from entering drains or water courses.

7.   HANDLING AND STORAGE

Usage Precautions: Good general ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Use materials resistant to strong alkali.

Storage Precautions: Area should be well ventilated, cool, dry, away from incompatible materials.

8.   EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Exposure limits: Caustic Soda: 2mg/m3 STEL Type OES

Protective measures:

Respirators: Type approved RPE if exposure to high vapour concentrations is expected.

Protective Gloves: PVC or rubber gloves

Eye Protection: Goggles or face shield

Other Protection: Footwear and apron

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stability: Stable under normal conditions

Materials to Avoid: Acids, Aluminium, Zinc, Alkalis, reducing agents.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Heating may produce: oxides of carbon, oxides of nitrogen. Evolves hydrogen in contact with aluminium and zinc. Can react violently with acids and chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Conditions to Avoid: Excessive humidity.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Health Warnings: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may result in dryness and cracking. This may in turn make the skin more susceptible to attack by other chemicals.

Contact with the eyes may lead to irritation, permanent damage is unlikely.

Ingestion of large doses may result in irritation of the mouth and upper digestive tract.

Caustic Soda: LD50 500mg/kg oral-rabbit (10% solution)
