COLONY HIGH SCHOOL ARMY JROTC UNIT HISTORY 2015

“KNIGHT’S BATTALION”

The Colony High School Army Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps was established in 1992 and is the only Army JROTC program in the Matanuska Susitna School District. The “Knight’s Battalion” has the distinction of being the first and only Army JROTC in history to earn the coveted title of Honor Unit in its first year of existence and has earned the Honor Unit with Distinction title every year since. The Corps is presently under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Butch Diotte, Senior Army Instructor, and First Sergeant (Ret) Derek Heavener, Army Instructor.

The Knight’s Battalion currently has 90 Cadets who actively participate in a variety of co-curricular, school, and community activities. Our Cadets host the annual Josh Prins Invitational Drill Meet and actively participate in Wacko, Cadet Challenge, Marksmanship, Military Ball, Dining Out and Awards Banquet, Drill Team competitions, Bowling, and the JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl.

The Knight’s Battalion is a very diverse and cohesive unit comprised of quality students from Colony High School, other Mat-Su Valley Schools, and home schooled students. Our Cadets participate in and play an active role in school sports such as football, soccer, cross-country skiing, baseball, basketball, softball, and track and field. Others participate in school groups such as Student Government, National Honor Society, drama, band, and choir.

The Knight’s Battalion Cadets actively participate in school and community events such as the State Fair Parade, Adopt-a-Highway program, community recycling, elementary school fall carnivals, parent night ushering, food drives, Colony Christmas Parade security, Gun Show security, and Community Emergency Response Training to name a few. Our Cadets are also honored to provide many Color Guards for the Mat-Su Valley. Over the past year the Corps has logged more than 2500 hours of community service.

Our Cadets have put their heart and soul (as well as a great deal of time, effort, and team work) into making Colony High School JROTC what it is today. Every Cadet in the Knight’s Battalion has contributed to our success and each epitomizes the mission statement: “To motivate young people to be better citizens.”
