Blanco, José et al. Vistas: Introducción a la lengua española. Boston: Vista Higher Learning, 2001.

Catalog Description:

This course provides an overview of the syntax, structures and vocabulary of the Spanish language, including intensive practice in the four skill areas of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. It introduces the student to the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world.

Prerequisites:

Elementary Spanish I & II, two years of recent high school Spanish or Waiver.

Objectives of the Course:

The aim of Spanish III is to provide students with a thorough review of grammar, idiomatic expressions and vocabulary through multiple and varied activities that promote practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing of the Spanish language. Students will be able to not only recognize the target material but also produce it in exercises that encompass the controlled full production continuum of language learning. Another objective, to a lesser degree, is to incorporate technology into the learning experience. Therefore, some assignments will be accessed and completed at the Foreign Languages and Literatures laboratory.

Course Content:

The text consists of a complete review of the structure and systems of the Spanish language in all its inherent aspects: i.e. regular/irregular verbs, tenses and moods, idiomatic expressions and vocabulary. In particular, Intermediate I reviews the indicative mood as such, as well as both the preterite and imperfect tenses. The present subjuntive is introduced and practiced extensively. The reading passages are of particular interest since they comprise a selection of both prose and verse, and excerpts or partial texts of well-known classic and contemporary writers, often times polemic. The text offers students ample practice in responding both verbally and in written form to its many activities, pictures and articles. I trust you will enjoy the text.
