Hi Everybody,

Welcome to our tutorial group for this presentation of B292 2017D, Management Accounting. I hope you will find the module stimulating and practical and I look forward to working with you over the next six months.

By now, hopefully, you will have received some of the course study materials; do not panic if the amount of material seems daunting! There will be much help available from myself, as your tutor, and via the Open University (OU) web site where you can access the electronic conferences and other module resources.

Face-to-face and online tutorials are available andyouwill be able to see when and where these are taking place shortly before the module starts on the 1st April.

I wouldstrongly recommend that you try to attend tutorials and there is a booking system which youwill be able to accessthrough studenthome (shortly before the module starts). You should contact me if you have any problems accessing information about and/or booking tutorials.

The most important thing at this stage is to ensure that you have internet access to the B292 module web site. You will have been sent, or already have from a previous module, a user name and password for accessing the ‘student home’ page on the OU web site. From this page, you will be able to access the B292 resources and conferences.

You must have access to the internet in order to complete the assignments on the course, which are computer marked assignments, and to submit the Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) which are submitted electronically. Please ‘get online’ as soon as you can, as you will be able to meet other students and myself.

Our own Tutor Group Forum (TGF) will be available shortly before 1st April 2017 and be open for welcome and introduction messages. Please reply to my welcome message! Then I will know you are up and running. Perhaps you can include something about yourself in your message (see mine below for an example).

If you have any technical computing problems, contact the OUBS Helpdesk on 01908 653972.

Please can you make sure the contact details on your OU student record are up to date at all times, as I will use these details if I need to contact you urgently, for any reason.

My contact telephone number is my mobile number (see above) – the best times to contact me are during the day Monday to Friday, but please feel free to contact me by text at any time and I will get back to you as soon as I can. (I do not have voicemail). If I am not available, please leave a clear message of who you are, with numbers where I can contact you, over the following twenty-four hours. Or you can e-mail me - I look at my e-mail every other day, but there may be a delay if I am working away or on holiday. I will let you know if that is the case by posting a message in the Tutor Group Forum.

We will use the TGF for answering queries, discussing the module ideas and some general chat! There is also a B292 Student Café available electronically where you can chat to all other B292 students on the module.

I look forward to hearing from you, speaking to you and, hopefully, meeting you soon- best wishes for your B292 studies!

Colin

Ps

I have attached some information about myself so you know a bit about me and can see that I am human!!

Married,

one daughter, who is now 33!! – doesn’t time fly!

Teaching for the last 30 years after 10 years in industry – specialism = management accounting

Working for the Open University since September 2010.

Degree, professional qualifications, and all that stuff!

Own teeth and hair!

Play football – although the wife thinks I shouldn’t.

If anyone has seen the programme “Would I Lie to You”; here is a variation. Below are three facts about me, but one of them is a lie; can you tell which one it is?

a)I once owned a car that originally belonged to Michael Owen (Liverpool FC’s highest goal scorer in the 1980-90’s).

b)I played for England at International level 32 times – but I am not saying what in!

c)I appear as a musician on three CD’s and a clip on YouTube, playing guitar and ukulele.

Perhaps, when you put a message on the TGF you can do something similar, but no obligation.
