CONGRESS OVERVIEW
As part of its mandate to foster knowledge transfer towards the professional development of project, program and portfolio managers, Project Management South Africa (PMSA) produces world-class conferences and congresses.
In 2013, PMSA supports the national focus on infrastructure development by presenting a two-day congress exploring the role project management plays to deliver infrastructure projects and the lessons that can be learned from projects delivered within a broad range of industries.
The Infrastructure PM Congress, taking place in Durban, South Africa, will attract project people directly or indirectly involved in infrastructure development from the public and private sector. The conference format allows for presentations, panel discussions and interaction between delegates and speakers. Speakers are handpicked for their knowledge and relevance of their insights and experience to the congress theme and project management practices. An opportunity exists for corporates, service and solution providers to participate as delegates, exhibitors, donors or sponsors, as detailed in this document.
WHAT IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE PM CONGRESS?
South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma was just a few paragraphs into his State of the Nation address on 14 February 2013 when he spoke of the NPC-proposed infrastructure projects, reporting on progress made, the tasks ahead and alluding to the inevitable challenges accompanying the awarding of tenders in, in particular, the built environment. It feels that, since the build-up to 2010, the country has had a sustained and exhilarating focus on project management to deliver on the promises. Those project people tasked with the delivery are concerned with excellence, meeting timeframes and giving the end-user what they expect and hope for, all the while with the sense that the nation may be watching their every move. With this ongoing focus and investment at so many levels, it is pertinent that PMSA presents a dedicated opportunity to showcase some of the successes achieved and those in progress that fall under the infrastructure development banner.
CONGRESS FORMAT
The two-day event follows a congress format which sees invited speakers deliver their presentations in 45-minute timeslots throughout the two days, interspersed with lunch and refreshment breaks that serve as excellent networking opportunities. The programme is designed to offer learning and knowledge transfer in the project management sense, regardless of the industry to which the content of the presentation is related. This exchange of ideas across industries is a common theme within PMSA, which focusses on generic application of project, programme and portfolio management (PPPM) standards, methodologiesand best practices.
The event will look at infrastructure project management on a national level on one day, and on a provincial level the next. There is no shortage of local case studies and the proposed speaker list presents a compelling blend of industry types and project focus areas. Examples include the Durban-Free State-Gauteng logistics and industrial corridor; Durban Port’s Pier 2, the proposed new dug-out port at the old Durban Airport, bus and rail transport projects, to name just a few. Projects to come under the spotlight from a national perspective include the Square Kilometre Array, renewable energy initiatives, additional sources of technology delivery and a host of others with lessons learned that contribute to our local body of project knowledge.
SPONSORING AND EXHIBITING
An opportunity exists for companies to exhibit and / or promote their products and services for the duration of the congress. Exhibitions will be accommodated in areas of high traffic, such as where refreshments are served, to afford delegates and exhibitors the opportunity to interact.
WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM SPONSORING / EXHIBITING
Sponsors and exhibitors are an intrinsic component of the PMSA congresses and conferences. The value of the opportunity is largely dependent on what the exhibitor / sponsor is prepared to put in, in terms of marketing their services, networking and otherwise participating in the event.
This is an ideal opportunity for providers of project management products and services as well as those who deliver projects to showcase the essence of their activities, attract new clients, employees, and otherwise promote themselves as thought leaders / employers of choice / innovators in the project management space.
PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES
In the past, sponsors and exhibitors have found value in one or more of the following:
- Presenting their goods and services by means of a ‘manned’ exhibit where company representatives engage with delegates on their range of offerings. Added value includes content that not only markets the exhibitor’s services but promotes their role as thought leaders / solution providers in a niche area of the industry. Delegates enjoy receiving practical information and resources that can assist them in their day-to-day work.
- Participating as a key sponsor in order to have an opportunity to present in a session on the conference programme. This is not an opportunity to market a product or service per se, but to showcase inherent knowledge or insights of the sponsor organisation. This is also an ideal opportunity to share valuable lessons learned in specific project management themes.
- Identifying a unique or creative way in which to entrench a product or service in the minds of the delegates. A vast array of opportunities exist, from clever give-aways to audio-visual presentations, quizzes, expert learning sessions etc. Most ideas can be negotiated with the conference organisers to tailor-make a sponsor opportunity.
