INTRODUCTION

This clinical audit report provides clinical data related to those patients who have consented to participate in the HeLP-GP trial. This audit is done on the first wave of patients to be recruited to the trial.

All patients are aged 40-74 years with BMI 28 who are not diagnosed with Diabetes or CVD and not prescribed insulin or weight management medications. This clinical audit was conducted using the Doctors Control Panel (DCP) software. Selection of indicators was based on recommendations from clinical guidelines for the assessment and management of risk for diabetes for patients aged 40 to 74 years. These guidelines are:

  • National Vascular Disease Prevention Alliance. Guidelines for the management of absolute cardiovascular disease risk. 2012
  • Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, Adolescents and Children in Australia (2013)
  • Royal Australian College for General Practitioners. Guidelines for preventive activities in general practice (The Red Book). 9th edition. 2012

The report aims to provide you with feedback about the control of these risk factors. In accordance with the current prevention guidelines, for the following variables:

  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol use

The most recent recording for the following variables were extracted:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference (last 12 months)
  • Blood pressure (for patients prescribed or not prescribed medication) (last 12 months)
  • Blood lipids (for patient prescribed or not prescribed medication) (last 24 months)

1. CONTROL OF RISK FACTORS IN PATIENTS WITH BMI 28+

The following table shows the recorded vales for smoking status, BMI, BP, Total cholesterol and Absolute risk. Patients with complete data are those for whom results tests were available and valid. Data that have been recorded in the inappropriate fields of the practice database cannot be extracted by the audit tool and are accounted for as missing. Therefore, data completeness reflects data quality and does not reflect your actual screening activities.
