Clean Air Grassroots Organizer

HEAL Utah, an environmental nonprofit based in Salt Lake City, is a grassroots advocacy organization which works to promote clean air and renewable energy, and protect Utah from nuclear, toxic & dirty energy threats.

HEAL is hiring a part-time, temporary Clean Air Grassroots Organizer to work with our staff and supporters during Utah’s wintertime “inversion” season, when levels of air pollutants regularly reach unhealthy levels, jeopardizing public health. The organizer will work closely with our Outreach Coordinator to educate Utahns about our air pollution problem and to encourage them to participate in campaigns to reduce emissions, including a range of strategies to boost our presence during the 2017 Legislative Session.

Description of Duties:

  • Use our online customer relationship management software, Salsa, to create action alerts, emails, and to track volunteers.
  • Use social networking platforms to engage current HEAL supporters via creating and promoting online actions, events, advertisements, etc.
  • Organize community events, recruit attendees and present information alongside HEAL staff and allies to the public (supporters, community members and students) about the health and economic impacts of clean air, policy solutions, and how citizens can get involved.
  • During the 2017 State Legislature session, train interested citizens in grassroots outreach and direct lobbying techniques. Assist the HEAL staff with lobbying efforts by recruiting and coordinating volunteers, writing and creating digital action alerts, and occasionally participating in direct lobbying.
  • Engage with HEAL supporters via email, phone calls, and meetings in order to provide outlets for engagement and help them become involved in current campaigns.
  • Maintain databases by tracking volunteer engagement and updating new supporter information.
  • Organize phone banks to reach out to supporters encouraging event attendance, legislative engagement, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Assist HEAL staffers and coalition partners in organizing a Clean Air Rally on January 21, 2017.

Qualifications

  • Must be passionate about HEAL Utah’s issues and in advocating for policies to protect public health and the environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to write clean, engaging text on short deadlines
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized to track dates, events, and volunteers
  • Must be able to learn quickly and utilize complex CRM software and social networking platforms (especially Facebook) for outreach
  • Possesses an outgoing personality and be comfortable speaking in front of a range of group sizes
  • Have a reliable mode of transportation for conducting and attending meetings around the Wasatch front
  • Previous organizing experience, ideally with advocacy or political campaigns, is a plus

Pay

The Clean Air Grassroots Organizer position is a temporary, part-time position which will span from early-to-mid December to mid-March. It pays $15 an hour for approximately 25-30 hours a week, largely during business hours, but will include periodic evening and weekend work. Compensation includes several paid holidays.
