Common Core Algebra 1

Dear Students:

In order to perform well in Algebra 1, I would like you to be aware of my classroom policies and procedures. Students are required to be in class on time. You should come prepared with the necessary items (book, paper, pencil, pen, calculator, etc.) that will make the class most productive.

Materials

Notebook: Three Ring Binder or a Two-Pocket Folder with a spiral notebook

Writing instrument: Two sharpened pencils and a pen

Calculator: Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus (REQUIRED) (the TI-83 Pluscalculator is the calculator that will be used in class. Thiscalculator can be purchased at the Iroquois High SchoolBookstore, Office Depot, OfficeMaxx, Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart, Ebay, Best Buy)

*** The Graphing Calculator is allowed to be used on the Integrated Algebra 1 Exam, which will be given in June, at the end of this school year

***The TI-83 Plus calculator will also be required for use in other mathematics and science courses taken throughout the student’s high school career.

Classroom Policies

These are the policies you should follow to in my classroom:

1. When the bell rings, you should be in your seat and ready to start class.

2. Come prepared with proper materials. You will not be able to go to your locker for them.

3. Remain seated during class.

4. Be respectful to others.

5. Maintain a positive attitude that is conducive to learning.

***Failure to follow these rules will result in a warning. If the problem persists you will be given a referral and I will call your home.

Absences

Students are responsible for making up notes, assignments, tests and quizzes. They must see me after they are absent.

Grading Procedures

Homework

Homework will be worth 20% of your quarter average. Normally, I will grade homework by checking it each day in class. I will grade on a scale of 0-4. Completed quality homework and checked will be a 4. Homework that is of poor quality will be a 1. Failure to complete homework will be a 0. You will have a week to finish any incomplete assignments to receive partial credit.

Quality homework contains the following... Poor quality is the following...

1. Problems are legible. 1. No work is shown.

2. Work is shown in step-by-step process. 2. Overall appearance of the assignment is sloppy.

*** Missing assignments will result in a telephone call or e-mails sent home.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be worth 25% of your quarter average. Regular notebook checks will be recorded as a quiz grade.

Tests

Testing represents 45% of the quarter average. Tests are cumulative in nature making the tests more difficult at present, but will be beneficial to the student at the end of the year. Each student should review old material each time he/she studies for a test.

Class Participation

Class participation represents 10% of the quarter average. Normally, I will grade class participation by checking your classroom notes each day in class. I will grade the classroom notes on a scale of 0-4. Completed quality classroom notes will be a 4. Classroom notes that are of poor quality will be a 1. Failure to complete classroom notes will be a 0. You will have a week to finish any incomplete classroom notes to receive partial credit.

Progress Reports

Progress reports are sent out at the end of the 5th, 15th, 25th, and 35th week of classes. Their purpose is usually to indicate unsatisfactory progress. EVERY student will be given a progress report. Each student is required to share their progress report information with their parent or guardian.

Final Exam

The final exam for this course is a New York Algebra 1 Common Core Exam. Everything that is learned from this year will prepare you for the state exam given at the end of this school year in June. This exam counts as 20% of the final grade. THE STATE EXAM IN JUNE MUST BE PASSED OR THE STUDENT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO GRADUATE.

Final Grade

The final grade of the Course will be determined by calculating the average of the 4 quarterly grades and the New York State Algebra 1 Common Core Examination.
